4340 crankshaft

What is your opinion on the best brand 4340 forged crankshaft on the market for a Ford FE, and why.

A forged crank in a street 600 hp FE is really a waste of $700. It's not necessary.

Off the shelf cranks are either available from scat or rpm. Scat gets my vote unless you need a 4.375" stroke, only rpm makes those.

It really depends. Forged cranks are very good insurance on a build going into any application that will see continuous use at higher RPM, as well as in high powered applications. I have no problem running a Scat cast crank in a 600+ horsepower street/strip style application. But a road race style car will see more time at high load and RPM in a single weekend than will a drag car in an entire year.

The Scat forgings are decidedly better than the RPM stuff from a cosmetic and dimensional viewpoint. I have no way to determine the comparative metallurgy. The Scat forging is +/- two times the price of an RPM and in my opinion worth the cost. The RPM parts cannot be installed as delivered unless you really enjoy taking risks. Neither of them are comparable to a billet from Scat, Moldex, Crower, etc. - but the billets are 2-3 times more money.
