Ribs on the FE Blocks

A lot of us have ribs on our late model FE blocks, service blocks, what-have-you blocks (pic of mine, below). There were a lot of rumors as to why Ford did this, but, most of the rumors were crap. A great thread about the ribs was just posted over on the FE forum and, for anyone who has ever wondered about the ribs, it's a must-read. 332-428 Ford FE Engine Forum: rib feature FE cylinder blocks (the real reason why) ......

Ribbed block here. The ribs don't seem located or sized for any particular structural purpose so the thread makes sense. Seems like a tedious effort for just noting a different casting group and slight change in metalurgy.

It's interesting some of the stuff they use to cast into engine blocks. 390s and 428s with a 352 number or 66 427 cast in. I was surprised when I pulled the 4-bolt 427 Hi-Per #321 block out of my Corvette and found "Truck" cast in the back bellhousing area. I think foundry workers must have had a strange sense of humor. %/

Read the article yesterday on the FE forum also. Very informative. My last 3 remaining 427 SO blocks have the ribs. 1 used and 2 still in the boxes.

I once tried ribs on my 427 block, but the race gas made them taste funny. ;-)

Pretty interesting. Still seems to be some debate on whether the change in metallurgy was better/worse/same as the production blocks.

Royce Peterson is the man on FE engines. He can be found on mercurycougar.net or the FE forums on the web.
