428CJ with dove aluminum heads excessive oil consumption

I have a 1966 428CJ that is using 1 quart of oil every 150 miles. The engine was completely rebuilt and has Dove aluminum heads, an edelbrock intake and a holley 4 barrel.

The car is dry underneath, leaks no oil, doesn't smoke and runs strong.

Any ideas??

I've read about intake gaskets getting pulled to the side and allowing ecessive oil to enter the cylinder. I'm wondering if this could be the issue?? Or could it be something else??

Thanks for the help

Several years ago---back in the 50,60,70s-----it was pretty common knowledge that a quart of oil every 100-200 miles could be the result of even a single defective/missing valve stem seal

Jerry is absolutely right. My first FE engine (a 428) built by a guy named Randy in OKC) had the exact same problem. Easy and cheap fix.

My bet's on the intake gaskets or Dove porosity.

I would check for intake manifold gasket leak because of complexity of angles involved, then valve stem seals and then proper crankshaft ventilation.

I had a 427 FE than needed oil before a gas refill. No leaks while parked, either.
It was a combination of above problems.

Best wishes,

fdjake, check your spark plugs. Make sure you aren't running too rich.

To burn that much oil, it has to smoke sometime, and when it smokes will tell you where to look.

Even a catalytic converter equipped car will smoke at a quart in 1000 miles.

Thanks guys.. I will have the intake gaskets and valve stem seals checked.

If it's loosing oil and everything is dry underneath, then there is only one place it could be going. Out the exhaust pipe. Sounds like you're on the right track.
