Tilton starter question
When I pulled my engine this past weekend, I found the starter gear a bit chewed up as well as the flywheel. I think I have the wrong Tilton starter in there.
Summit and others list the same starter as correct for Ford small blocks, big blocks and FEs ( Tilton Engineering 54-10913 - Tilton Standard Duty Super Starters - Application - SummitRacing.com), but I don't think that's right according to the specs on how far the gear extends. See this article: http://www.gessford.com/cobraparts/i...otorquemax.gif. There is a 3/8" extension difference between the OEM FE starter (2 3/8") and the small block starter (2").
There are no part numbers on my Tilton, but the 3/8" difference looks like it would be the difference between fully engaging the flywheel and not, leading to my chewed gear. %/ So I must have the small block starter in there.
So, who knows where to get the right one? |

I have used a Tilton starter for several years. The key to making them work correctly is having the static clearance set properly. The depth is adjusted with shims AND various nose pieces which Tilton have if needed.
There are knockoff starters that use the same Hitachi style motor but are not of the same quality.

dcdoug Doug if you are running a Lakewood with a block protector, this is the problem with the starter and flywheel teeth being chewed up. I can't answer for the Quicktime bell setup. The only way to get complete engagement is to cutout the block saver around the start hole. The starter must be bolted FLAT to the bellhousing. I ran a Tilton for 14 years and replaced the bendix drive 1 time. The engagement will increase 3/16" of an inch and give you better engagement. I tryed running an OEM starter and had the problem of when hot the motor didn't want to crank. Mini starter is the better way to go IMO. You also want a .35"-.55" clearence between the teeth of flywheel and teeth on starter drive. Rick L.

I will check to see if I have a block protector, but think that this may have been caused by user error - restart attempts before flywheel has come to a rest. It's happened a few times - if you can believe because in the early days my key chain was a bit long and I inadvertently turned off the ignition while driving and then wasn't thinking and turned the key to start rather than run. :o

It's not like I was continuously trying to crank the engine, but the starter was engaged briefly. But yes, you can all pile on now.:JEKYLHYDE Sort of like the skins today. %/
