Howard's Lifters

Does anyone know if you can buy one roller lifter from Howards? I just put them in during the last rebuild and one came apart on me or bound up on Saturday.

They're not really Howards lifters. They are Morel lifters, which get re-packaged by Howards, Lunati, Bullet, etc.

These are the ones you got from me, right? What happened?

Yes, those are the ones. I went on a run on Saturday and about halfway home the car started missing. Pulled the plug wires one at a time yesterday, and determine that the one hole wasn't firing. Pulled the valve cover and the rocker arm for the exhaust valve was loose. Pulled the rest of the plugs and tried to adjust the rocker and it wouldn't pump up. I'm going to fool with it some more this week but it looks like the lifter is either seized or has let go.

They're all I use for hydraulic roller stuff....385's, FE's, and SBF's.

If it's a lifter issue, let me know.

I am pretty sure it is, but I'm going to back everything off and spin the motor around by hand a couple of times to see if it will pump up, before I take the manifold off. If it pumps up, I'll set it back up and run it a bit. I'll let you know what shakes out.

You probably won't be able to spin it by hand and pump it up. If you have a priming tool, prime the pump with a big healthy drill motor and get the oil flowing. It should oil the lifters up enough to see what's going on.

If that doesn't work, you may be able to do a surgical procedure and pull the lifter pair out through the head/intake. If you took the lifter apart, you may be able to see if something has it clogged up, or if there is an issue.

...could be a failed lobe too.

Let's not go there right now. PLEASE.

I had one seize in the lifter bore & wear the lobe off the cam.

Uh-oh, you went there...

It appears that I got luckier than you. I scoped the cylinder and there does not appear to be any damage. The lifter was compressed and stuck. Broke it loose but it is still sticky. Not sure if it is a burr or crud or what, but Blykins has a new one on the way overnight and I should be ready to reassemble on Friday. Great service and fantastic customer support. Thank you.
