cyl 7-8 crossfire
I have the dreaded 7-8 crossfire problem which is easily rectified by separating the two wires, however it looks like crap! I have the wires run over the top center of the vc's as per original, and the wires are all parallel. All the pics of 427 engines I've seen have the wires run this way, so how are they getting by with this, unless that's just for pics or show, and the change wire placement for actual running ? I believe twisting the two wires a turn or two does the trick, but that doesn't look very good either.
Any suggestions? |
What type wires and ignition are you using? A good set of wires shouldn't allow that to happen.
|
LH: MSD 6al, Taylor 8.5 mm wires.

That seems pretty standard. I'm running my wires like yours but they're MSD so I don't know how much that changes things. Can you see where the cross fire is happening? i.e. a spark between wires? If so I'd think there was a problem with the wires.

LH: I could hear a "Popping" in #8 carb stack at idle, almost metallic, like a valve sticking, and rough running and backfire through intake when driving. That all went away by twisting 7&8 wires or moving #8 away as far as possible.
It is an fe anomally due to firing order,as #'s 7&8 are adjacent and 8 fires right after 7. |
That goes back to 1958-----The order of the wires over the left valve cover are 7,5,6,8-Patrict has pictures---------
It was common place in late 50s early 60s to get a tune up and car would run like crap because 3 wires would have been put back on the wrong plugs---- |

Ran like crap today, had to cut the drive short and come home. Ran very well yesterday!
The wires are new ,8mil Taylor "Sprio Pro" made for MSD type ignition. Run high voltage wires close and parallel there's going to be some induction, many electrical devices depend on it. Will try Patricks/Jerry's fix tomorrow if it doesn't rain !, |
It isn't Patricks/Jerry's fix-----its the way Ford built them

5,7,6,8 works for me too. I'm in the dark ages, still running solid core wires, without any negative effects.
