I have a Cobra with an 390 FE, just replaced the intake and carb, along with plug wires, when timing, I have a smal back fire at 3000 RPM. set at 6 deg, anyone have any suggestions. Or should i be looking for something else? Thanks

Move it out to a out 10 to 12 to start and try again. What kind of ignition set up do you have?

At 3000 rpm you should be set at somewhere between 30 and 38 degrees advanced. This must not include any vacuum advance. Disconnect the vaccuum advance and plug the vacuum line before checking your timing.

Mallory's are factory set at 24 degrees of total advance. Set timing at 36 all in at give or take 3000 rpm. 36 minus 24 equal 12 at start up. You should be good.

Found a problem
Got it timed and still had slight back fires, took out the plugs and found the driver side has been running lean, I the looked into the carb, found one side spraying fuel good and one side poorly, it's a new carb. Anyone have any ideas or shall I contact summit where I bought the new carb?

I would pull the float bowl and check that the primary jets are clear. Probably a small bit of metal stuck on jet left from manufacturing

Make double sure firing order is correct and that 7 and 8 plug wires are not running parallel or you can get cross fire between them. Firing order 15426378 and rotor spins counter clock wise.

Found a lifter froze up, found the cam also damaged, replaced both and all is fine.
|
your scaring me herman........you wiped a cam and a lifter, and just replaced them?
what about all of the debris from the damage, where do you think it all went?.....
your fix may only be short lived......
