Need Crankshaft Nose Dimension

I was wondering if someone here can provide spcifications for the nose of the 428 crankshaft. I have spent quite a lot of time researching with no success. Specifically, I need the diameter of the nose where the harmonic balancer fits. I discovered today that my harmonic balancer can be easily pulled off by hand and I'm pretty sure that's not right. I believe it should be a light interferance fit. If I knew the spec for the crankshaft I could verify which part is defective, eg; damper or crank.

Appreciate any help.

FWB,

Thanks very much. Big help.

You should have about .0005" to .001 Press with Anti seize compound. Some dampners like BHJ you can buy on the small size and then fit to the snout.

George,

Thanks for the reply. I found that the bore on the balancer was a lot worse than I first thought but the crank snout is in pretty good shape. Since this balancer was already balanced for my engine I decided to repair it. I bored it, machined a bushing with a flange on the outboard side from 4140PH, installed it in the balancer with a .0015 heat shrink fit, drilled and tapped through the flange with three 1/4-20 set screws just for some extra security and broached the key in exactly the same orientation as the original. I bored the bushing for a .0005 press fit but haven't installed it yet. Hopefully all will be ok now.

a 427 is internally balanced, any zero balance balancer would be able to be put on there and maintain the same balance. you don't have to put a bandaide on that one if you don't want to

i was reading his info and saw the 427 S/O.....well 428 crank....could go either way. i can't imagine anyone building a 27 with a 28 crank using external balance......anything is possible

The engine is a 427 SO with a 428 crank. Documentation that I have for the engine indicates that it was internally balanced but the harmonic balancer has definitely been balanced. Since the engine builder has passed away, I can't ask him any questions about the build, so thought it would be wise to use the existing balancer.

if your sure it was internally balanced, and if you have any receipts showing a big hunk of mallory metal
then that means the balancer is zero balance. and so will be the flywheel or flexplate

what your seeing in the work on the balancer is what he had to do to make it zero balance.

so you can buy an aftermarket balancer that is zero balance and use that instead of sleaving the old one

you could get the balancer checked to see exactly what it is.....

With the repair I've made I'm pretty confident that the balancer is now in good shape, but having the balancer checked is probably a good idea just so I know where I'm at with respect to the balancing of this motor.

Thanks for your input.
