Rear Main Side Seal Leak.
I have a fresh 427 motor that showed signs of rear main leak during 30 minute cam break in. Upon further inspection it would appear to be coming from a side seal. I used standard Fel-Pro gasket set with two piece rubber main seal ,and rubber and "nail" side seal. My questions are as follows:
1.) What is the best side seal to use in this replacement? Manufacturer, etc. 2.) Should I be able to replace the side seal and expect the rear main seal to go back together without leaks? If I should replace the rear main, is this possible without removing the crank? 3.) What side seal installation method is best? Christ's book recommends installing the rear main cap until it is 1/8" off register then install the side seal rubber. Seat the cap and then install the nails. Any input from FE experts would be appreciated. |
