composite or polymer gear for FE?
I'm running a Comp cams solid roller. I was looking into buying a composite dizzy gear. They seem to be unavailable in .500 for aftermarket dizzy and also unavailable in .467 for FE though they are available for SBF in .467. I guess the difference, even though they share the same shaft diameter, is either the pin location or gear pitch??
Anyone know of a vendor that sells composite gear for FE? I mean, the composite or polymer gears as they are sometimes called, have been around for a few years now. You would think that these gears would now be available for FE. Ray |
It doesn't matter what kind of engine you have (FE), it's cam material and distributer shaft size, brand. You need to call Comp cams and they'll tell you what you need.

I THINK the gear pitch & tooth count is the same on the FE & Cleveland, but shaft sizes & oil pump hex remain different ( please verify this before spending your $$ ). SBF Fords 302 & 351 Windsor have identical tooth count, but different shaft & hex sizes. Check with some of the FE builders like KC, B2 etc to see where they are sourcing this stuff. I have assumed your running std pump & wet sump, If your using a dry sump then a good bronze gear will suffice as there is no pump load then.
I have always meant to look into swapping the oil pump gears for those from a 351 with 5/16" hex, enlarge the pump shaft spigot in the block & fit the 351 shaft into the FE dizzy to over come some of the issues, but the need has not arisen yet, but getting closer!!:) |
Neither...
Run a steel gear from Crane or Mallory. If you tell me which distributor you have, I can give you a part number. I have the Crane gears in stock for an MSD...if you need one, let me know. |
We use the Crane gears as well
Readily available in .467, .500 and .531 shaft dia |
Use the steel gear. Install and forget.
Any bronze or composite will wear fast if you use a HV oil pump. Or do you want to change the gear regularly? |
