smoke out of the valve cover breathers.
Was out make a couple of adjustment on my KC 482 today, and notice very light blue smoke coming from both breather caps. Any cause for concern?? Engine has about 2200 miles on it, no full acceleration or high rpms as of yet.

Sounds like there is more gasses blowing by the rings than the PCV is sucking in. You may want to verify the PCV is working correctly. The rings may seal up better with a few more miles.

Double check your timing, as well. I know Keith recommends 40 degrees advance (at least on my engine - depending on your cam). With the 91 octane fuel and the elevation out there in Ramona, you may be rattling the rings just a bit.

Benny, Call KC and run it by him. That definitely sounds like blowby. At 2000 miles, those rings should be seated by now.

I think he said ..both.... breathers ..........which means there is no PCV , and that is his problem.........

If this is at idle your ignition at idle may be too retarded (headers glowing and brake fluid boiling) you may be burning oil under the pistons which bypasses past the rings.
They can't cope with the excessive blow by.
I cannot give much advise on ignition at idle for your engine, but I myself aim towards 16 deg - as much as the starter can cope with. (racing cars, like my buddy's M8F are set fixed to about 38 deg - which you can't crank with engine hot)
The more duration the cam has, the more you need. Else you burn mixture into the exhaust (due to cam overlap).

Is the engine hot when you are making this determination? It could be condensation, are you sure it's blue. What does it smell like.? Are the breathers oilly? If not it could be just condensation. I had this happen to me before I figured it out.
Did you just discover this now at 2200 miles? If it was rings not seating it would have been there from the start. Your talking about a KC engine and they usually break it in and dyno it before it's delivered.
I leak down will help. Do a little investigation first, then if it is Blue oily blow-by with proof on the breathers call Keith.

At 2200 miles, you're way past due to romp on that engine. I firmly believe that babieing an engine is just as bad as over revving and ragging it out. You have to stretch those legs every once and a while and blow out the cob webs.

It seems kind of archaic but this kind of describes the experience I once had with a BB Chevy engine. Only after I took a good long highway trip with 4.10 gears and then changed to a different brand of oil, did it seem like the rings seated and it settled down and oil consumption slowed way down. |
