PLEASE HELP!!! Code on block and NYS vin inspection issue

2 Attachment(s)
I went in for my NYC vin inspection today and I have a C6ME-A block. It has the usual date code under the oil filter that says it was made in 1966 and does not match the other code on the flat in the pictures that says 6F27 the investigator is telling me that is a vin number that was partially ground off and he has to investigate to see if he can issue the vin or have to impound the block. I have searched for HOURS and can not find anywhere that tells what that code on that tab is. What code is in that location?

It was my understanding vin numbers were not put on blocks till 1968? If this is true does anyone have any documentation of this?

I have only seen partial VIN numbers on the back of the block just under the deck - - never on the tab you're looking at.

Although I have not noticed them stamped at your location, the code appears to be something of "Ford-ese" for 1966, June 27.

Possible that it was some sort of service part or installation date?

I don't think that's a "F" Barry, i think its a 5, like someone's 4 digit inventory number.

anyway the guy at the NY station is a wanker. no Vins would be there, if any vin was ever on the block and that only went for shelbys and high falooting cars, it would be on the flat at the back of the block just below the head like Barry said.

what to do at this point?........i don't know. the wanker holds the cards.
he knows enough to be dangerous. you have to get some documentation showing him vins are not on ford blocks especially where he is looking.
google will be your friend.

can you go over his head? do you know any cops? call your local representative, hopefully you voted for them.

That's a 5 and not an F....

I have seen some reports on the FE forum that it could be an assembly date hand stamped in when the block was machined. Trying to find real evidence to support that.

My father is a cop and was with me at the inspection and that got me nowhere. I have a couple buddies that are troopers and are going to try and make some calls to see what they can find out. I risk pissing him off if he finds out I went over his head though.

Camera made it look a little weird it is definitely a F to my eyes.

Well for one, not all 1966 Ford blocks were stamped with a VIN. HI-POs and 427s were, most were not. The casting number and date code indicate a 1966 block.

When Ford VIN'ed a block, it was stamped on the flat area behind the intake manifold at the rear of the block. Common sense would indicate that a "stamping" is a recessed marking and NOT a raised, cast number on the block. But, hey these are gummint people!

It's an F. If you save that picture and zoom in on it, it's clearly not a 5.

I'd guess machining or assembly date if it's after the casting date code.

Take a look at this link that explains that it is a date code and that is all. interesting information on decoding blocks and dates...Good luck with the inspection.

MCD …

My only suggestion is to gather as much documentation you can (from the suggestions above) to make your case and print it out, and be sure to site the sources.

The challenge will be to present this as diplomatically as possible to the inspector, so he can come to the conclusion, that indeed the numbers on your motor have not been altered. If the documentation is clear, the numbers on the block will speak for themselves. If you can, mark up the information you have that illustrates your point and let him keep it. Should work for you and maybe help the next guy.

If that does not work, then go to plan B.

Best of luck.

frdfvr thank you that link was good. I have printed out numerous articles and posts and plan to present those as gently as possible.

If anyone has some sort of documentation that states Ford did not VIN stamp engines until 1968 model year that would be a huge help.

make sure you have receipts for all parts of your drive train, if you don't they can be impounded.

MCDSiena 04-22-2014 03:23 PM

I have a receipt for every penny spent on the car and trust me its a lot of pennies.

I printed off everything under the sun I could find validating that was an assembly date code and that Ford did not issue VIN's until 1968 and dropped it off today. The investigator said "don't think just because you brought this stuff down here I am going to give you a vin. I'll have to check with my superior I'm still not sure it isn't a half ground off VIN number"

Well an hour later he called me saying he will issue me a VIN# and will be driving to my house to affix it so I don't have to trailer the car back down there.

Guess his superior gave him a talking to.

Thanks for everyone's help, should be fully on the road by the weekend.

Glad to hear everything worked out and your getting closer to being registered.....I wonder about some of our DMV folks.

I thank God every day I don't live in one of the socialist states of Amerika. ;-)

I live in Louisiana and would consider it as old school america as anywhere. As of 2010 the DMV is very strict on kit cars. They are always titled as the year model followed by Assembled Vehicle. State trooper comes to your house for inspection. He takes pictures of the block vin and trans vin and runs them on his computer in his car. If they don't check out they are impounded then and there. Glad mine checked out back in 2010. Glad you made it, he might not have known all the facts.
