Lakewood Bellhousing Ground Clearance Issues
I have Lakewood Bellhousing in my FE car and I have had enough with the lack of ground clearance. I was thinking about trimming (grinding) just the flange at the bottom of the bell to gain about an inch of clearance. I was thinking about doing while its on the car because it was such a pain to dial it in on the install. I read other older threats about trimming and they mention warping.
Thoughts???

I had to do the same thing to my Lakewood bellhousing on my first Roadster.

Hack it off while its on the car, it won't warp. It won't warp if you were to cut it with it off either. Cut it flush with the start of the curve of the bell housing.

When the bell housing doesn't hit the ground, what WILL hit the ground? Maybe the oil pan? Careful what you wish for......

Use a sawzall, and cut the bottom off, I think maybe 4 bolt holes, not cutting into the housing chamber.

sawzal, porto-band or a 4" cut off wheel on a grinder.

If you go to my photo gallery you can see several photos about whats allowed to be trimed off and still pass SFI specs

An inch might not seem like much but it certainly is. Our Lakewood has not touched the ground since it's surgery.

We had to cut all that we put on the engines going into the Cobras. Do not want that thing catching on something and coming to a quick stop.

I trimmed mine with a 4" angle grinder. I was shocked at how easy it was to trim. Almost like a warm knife through cold butter. Not quite but you get the idea. I've used a sawzall for many other applications and I can't help but think the angle grinder would way easier.

I just did a Quik Time in the car with the 4" cut off wheel in a grinder and dusted over it with the disc pad. They are pretty quick and easy and it makes a huge difference in ground clearance. I'd rather touch my pan with the clearance between pan and pickup. That would at least graze over something. I still see the pan is higher than the bellhousing. The bellhousing/motor plate is a hook waiting to run into a high manhole cover or something and try and tear your running gear out.
