FE Remote oil hose fittings
I just got a replacement remote oil filter housing from the Finishline sale.
On the website it states the fitting neded are 'Thread size is 3/4" - 16' Can anyone tell me what this means? Is his BSP, AN, NPT ....or ....? I'm confused. :confused::confused::confused: [I posted this exact same thread over 12 hrs ago, but its gone!] |
Is it a hole or a threaded protrusion?
The 3/4-16 thread is used in multiple applications with -8AN fittings. SAE 45 degree flare, JIC 37 degree flare, and SAE O-ring fittings. |
The "3/4" is a US tapered pipe size and the " -16" is an AN Hose fitting size.

3/4-16 is standard fine thread fastener size. 3/4" diameter, 16 threads per inch. It's what your nipple size is for a standard SBF, BBF, etc.

thats the thread for your oil filter...... 3/4-16

FWB's actual name is Fred....he just sells Brad Penn oil. :)
If I remember correctly, those are 1/2-NPT to AN fittings. NPT is tapered (the T means tapered). |
3/4-16 is just a straight fine thread standard for many oil filters. They are 1/2" NPT for the hoses. I have a quick video of plumbing and routing the hoses here.

Background NPT stands for National Pipe Tapered Thread. It is also sometimes called National Pipe Thread, NPTF (F for Fuel), American Standard Taper, or simply "pipe". Most other plumbing fittings have straight or parallel threads, but NPT fittings have a tapered thread. The outside diameter of the male thread tapers down from the base, so the end of the fitting has a smaller OD than the base of the fitting. The matching female thread has a larger OD at the opening, tapering down as it goes in. Regarding fitting the hose ends: The adapter fitting for the hoses will be 1/2" NPT to -10 AN, if you plan to use 5/8" i.d. hose. Some folks use 3/4" i.d. hose, and the adapter fitting would be 1/2" NPT to -12 AN. David |

Just to re--bump this....after 6 months off the project.....
so I bought a brand new remote housing from the finishline sale, as i thought the old threads may be damaged from having the wrong fitting pushed into them, and bought a 1/2"NPT adaptor for my existing hose: AN -10 AN10 JIC Flare to 1/2 NPT STRAIGHT MALE Fuel Oil Hose Fitting Adapter | eBay from ebay. The chamfered end goes into the end of my hose fitting nice and neat. The square end goes into the remote house by less than 1 turn before it goes hand tight. :CRY::CRY: I can't beleive this is right - please, can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Even on a taper friction fit I would have thought I'd get a few turns in before needing a wrench. Do I need a different fitting? Is it really 3/8" NPT on these housings? |
I have had the same issue as you described with the Finishline housing, the fix for me was to run a 1/2 NPT tap into the threads. We also enlarge and smooth the oil passages.

I put the tap right to them as the holes are no where near deep enough for the fitting to have any thread sealing area. When the NPT holes are tapped out to a decent size I use ARP thread sealant or Loctite PST on them.

I recently installed the Shelby remote oil adapter, which may be the same part. I believe the adapter I used was a 3/4"-16 NPT male to 12 AN male. I found them at Summit and used a clear anodized aluminum finish. I used pipe sealing compound (not tape) on the NPT side, and of course no sealant, only a drop of oil, on the AN side. Just back from holiday many thanks for your replies. I got a brass 1/2" NPT adaptor fitting for my mechanical gauges - i ran this in and gave it a few hard turns, and now one of the fittings sits much better, the other hole needs attention. i also took a look at the htread on one of the hose fittings - looks messed up, so i'll get a new fitting and see if i can find a 1/2"NPT taper thread from somewhere - not very common in the UK!). thanks all.
