Cross Bolts - Do they need sealant?

Leaking oil seems to be the bane of the 427! Just wondering if you're suppose to put any type of sealant on the cross bolt shanks or under the washers. Certainly not on the threads. I seem to have some seepage around a couple of mine. At least there is some wet oil near the oil pan rail.

I don't have cross bolted mains but I was wondering about this the other day. It would seem that without sealer under the washers they would just about have to leak. Curious to hear the answer.

Yep, I put a little rtv under the washers and bolt heads. Never had a leak there.

yes for sealer

I have shelby motors that have a double row of side bolts. I use teflon sealer on all the heads of the bolts. No leaks in 15 years of racing this motor from these bolts. In stalled a stroker kit from Brent and in corrosion of the block holes. Some RTV will attack aluminum. Grey or Silver is the best RTV for all around. Rick L.
