Spark plug boot insulators

How many of you guys might actually use the fiberglass plug boot insulators?
My car came with them but frankly, I dont particularly like the looks and they are somewhat of a PIA to work around pulling and reinstalling the MSD plug boots.
I have about 500 HP with Edlebrock heads that handle heat pretty well but replaced my wires recently after discovering a break in one ,probably a result of these things.
What am I missing here, if anything?

I use the fiberglass sleeves over the boots as my headers are such that there is a lot of heat concentrated on the boots. Prior to using them one of the boots had become very soft from the heat. Pre Webers.

Thanks Rick. I guess a follow up question would be, how suseptable to heat degradation are the current boots used on the MSD 8.5mm wire sets?

Rick Parker 11-12-2014 11:30 AM

I'm not qualified to answer that. I wanted something other than straight boots.

I am using the big Taylor wires and their 'glass sleeves as well for extra protection of the boots. Lots of heat around there. I also always use a spark plug boot pulling tool instead of just trying to reach down and yank on them. Some dielectric grease inside the boot helps with install and removal too.

A mate of mine has MSD 8.5 leads. One did start to burn as was just touching one pipe.
The rest are fine even though some are about 1.5mm away from the pipes.

This is what I would be running if I had a problem like that:

I have silicone boots that live very close to my headers.......no problems at all....

Mine are not particularly close to the headers, however, I got a minute and called MSD tech., boots are good to 500deg. so I guess I learned something.
