Hello Everyone

I was looking for parts and found your site and I have always wanted a Cobra and maybe some day I will, but I have been a Ford fan for many years.

I do have a 67 Mercury Cougar XR7 GT with a FE that was parked in 1983 with a rod knock, that I was gonna fix, but was side tracked.

SPECS:
GT 390
428 SCJ heads
Offy Port A Sonic
Cam - Old Gus Davis - Greg Foreman Grind .612" lift 258 deg @ .050
Hooker 2 1/8" Adj Drag headers
Built C-6
3,500 Stall
Locker with 4:57's

I have since picked up a few items along the way, a 67 std bore side oiler block, and a early Shelby manifold and valve covers. So as money allows I be sourcing the rest to put these parts to use.

The block was recently finished, line honed, deck & squared and honed out to 4.250".

Next the caps, had bolt indentations from being torqued down how ever many times, and since I went with main studs that use washers under the nuts, I wanted a flat surface for the washers to sit against, so I had them touched upped.

Here is some Crank Trivia: This crank is a C4AE-6303-G, research has found it was used in the 64 HR motors the T-Bolts and was in the over the counter 7,000 RPM kits, and this one has 2 extra counterweights added off the center main to help smooth out vibrations that crack the blocks around the center main on SOHC motors used in the NASCAR program. This crank I had cleaned up, the mains & rods ground and the weights Bull Nosed & Knife Edged.

I decided to go with the Sidewinder instead of the Shelby manifold after finally getting all the stripped out carburetor stud holes time serted, I bought this manifold for this build 10 years ago.

No Sonic Check, the bore was actually @ 4.242" so .009" over, I don't know the history of how it got there, maybe a .005" over piston, and or some re-rings and honing, who knows. So I just had it honed out .008" to 4.250" to clean up any tapers with torque plates. The cyl thicknesses are what they are and a Sonic wouldn't of changed the intended use of the motor, which will be a 10.5 to 1 CR daily driver. When I have to go back thru this thing again down the road, and should I have to go larger on the bore for some reason I'll do a Sonic then.

I'd say it was worn .009. Nobody makes a piston .005 over stock.

I stand corrected, back in the day the Ford & TRW pistons all made by TRW for the 427 came standard and .003" over, not .005" over, I am getting old my memory is off by .002".


But then you could be right about the normal wear and add a couple of re-ringings and honing could account for .009" over, probably was noisy when cold.

According to my limited knowledge and all of my books, I can't find that crank. So based on what your research has told you, sounds like a very nice piece.! Looks great!

Is that a tunnel port head sitting on the left side?

Thanks it does look pretty nice.
Here is another pic of the crank.

I forgot to mention, this crank came with grooved mains that I had welded up before they went .020". And the sad thing about this crank, the guy I bought it from had just had it turn .010" from standard and who ever he had do the machining didn't know what they were doing because both the rods & mains were below the minimum on the low side, so I ended up paying twice for the same work, but at least the 2nd time it was done right.

Then there's the bearing selection, which are mostly fully grooved mains in .020" under, so I went Cleveland 1/2 grooved mains and ground the tangs off the bearings, then had the crank ground to spec.

"The DSO parts build list for the T-Bolt also calls for the C4AE-G forged steel crank, along with the 4V NASCAR engine."
