A 696 hp 465 inch Tunnel Port FE....

I've posted this on a couple of the other forums that I frequent. I just think it's old-school cool, and frankly, I'm pretty excited about it. :)

The build consisted of a Pond cast iron block, with a 4.310" bore. RPM 3.980" crankshaft with BBC rod journals, Race Tec domed pistons (12:1 compression), Lunati H-beam rods, and a custom Comp Cams solid roller cam, 260/270 @ .050", 108 LSA, .750" lift.

Heads and intake were ported by a local guy who's just a genius, for a lack of better words. He got 380 cfm out of the old Tunnel Port heads by making them smaller. :)

Two Quick Fuel 725cfm carbs were on top and I mounted a GZ Motorsports vacuum pump pulling 8 inches of vacuum on the front of it.

We had dyno'd this engine before, without head work, and with a cam to band-aid the cylinder head characteristics. It made 600 hp at full song.

This time, the first pull to just 5200 rpm netted us the 600 hp. Subsequent tuning and higher pulls yielded 654, 680, and finally 696 hp. Torque was 589 lb-ft. :)

Awesome. What logic drove you to the cast iron block?

blykins 01-31-2015 06:25 AM

Couple reasons...

Larger bore capacity. On the Pond aluminum block, it's done at 4.310". The cast iron block will go over 4.400".

And, it adds to the "old-school" look that the customer wanted.

Great build Brent. Read about it on the other site, but I'll comment here because, well, you know, I didn't invent the venturi .

Question: why didn't your customer go for a 4.25 stroke? With those nice parts, it still could've turned the same RPM, couldn't it?

Joe's Garage 01-31-2015 10:21 AM

Being a newbie I was going wait to see if the dyno chart or table was coming. I am curious about what RPM the 696 HP was at.

Peaked at 6700, spun it to 7 grand.

What octane fuel was that dyno pull made on, was it pump premium unleaded?

dallas_ 01-31-2015 10:40 AM

Cool. What's it going in to?

Phil, the customer wanted something old school. That's why he decided on a 428 stroke crankshaft. I'm in the process of getting him to try a 4.250" or 4.375" crank, and with the way the heads perform, I think I can hit the 750 mark.

Joe's Garage, I'm sorry, I did forget to post that, but Phil had it correct....6700 was the hp peak.

We pulled it on 112 Sunoco. It's going in a '67 Fairlane.

Not trying to be a dick at all Brent, but old-school went out the window with the CSR, Jay's adapters, and that cool vacuum pump lol!

At 465 cubes, you matched the output of the 496 TP on Jay's site. Awesome job!!

blykins 01-31-2015 11:37 AM

True.....

He was intent on getting big power out of a smaller displacement.

It's a strong piece. I'm very pleased with it.

Getting a new crank, new pistons, and a new cam.....

Aiming for some more data and some more fun.....and a little north of 750 hp. :)

Nice. Looking forward to hearing the numbers.
