FE info from new member
Greetings from Tasmania. My first post (apart from uploading two photos yesterday). Back in the 1970s I enquired about purchasing a 427 SOHC from Holman & Moody Inc, but ended up buying the parts needed to build up a 427 Tunnel Port from PSE in California. This engine has been in a 1968 Mustang until a couple of years ago when I purchased a 482 aluminium short block (Robert Pond) from Keith Craft and installed my original cast iron TP heads on it. Very pleased with this combination but have always kept up with any SOHC information and articles. Might still build up one as a retirement project. The photos show the H & M reply and the 482 TP engine bay.

Do you have any Cobra replica plans? Cheers, Glen |
wow if only they were that cheap now!!!! It costs that much for one head today.

Welcome Tassy. You're getting responses from all Aussies so far...
That's very cool to see the HM correspondence. Interesting to see the price. Seems cheap, but back then you could have bought a Phase 3 Falcon for that sort of coin. They're worth hundreds of thousands now..! Actually, a 427 Cobra would probably have been about that kind of money at the time too... Are you running a strut front end in the Mustang? |

Tazzy,
That is a very nice looking cobra that you have there. I had a NASCAR 427 Tunnel Port in one of my earlier cars but traded it for a 390 HIiPo as it just wasn't drive able on the street. If I remember correctly it cost me a grand total of around $4,800 back then. I also went in and talked to the Ford Dealer about getting a 427 Cammer, and the price was about what your sheet shows, but after the fiasco with the tunnel port I decided to stay with something that I could drive below 7,000 RPM. Congratulations on your Cobra and I hope that you can find everything that you want soon. Ron :) |

Welcome to the site Tassy. Say hi to my friends in Hobart. Used to live in Melbourne and planning on a visit (from Georgia, USA) in 2016. If in the area, i would love to stop by.

I also love the TP and had one in a '61 Starliner. It had a single plane manifold and much as I tried it was just not streetable. That was back in the early '70s and finding a dual-plane manifold seemed impossible then although I knew they existed and still do. I swapped it out for a fairly stock Medium Riser and was able to drive below 7k like Ron. |
Thanks to responders to my original post.
xb-60 Don't have any Cobra replica plans at the moment but almost went that way before deciding to restore my Mustang. 750-hp I am using a TCP coil over front end, rack and pinion right hand drive with power steering. Some minor problems slightly reducing lock to lock steering movement but generally pleased with results. 2" headers and notched shock towers which makes plug changes much easier. Truetriplex I lived in Hobart for many years but now live in Devonport on the NW coast. Not too many FEs in this part of the world let alone 427s. A couple of 428s and a few 390s that I know of. By all means drop by if you are in the area. Cheers, tassy |
Hi All, new member trying to figure out what my 1964 427 fe engine is worth. It has dual quad carbs all original and runs perfect. It's in a boat now and don't know if I should try to sell engine alone or with boat. I'm in So Cal

Look for C_-AE-_ numbers on the block near the oil filter. Then, look for something similar on the heads and intake. Last, post pics of all of that, including pics of the sides of the block just above the pan rail. Lots of folks here that can narrow down what you have with that kind of info!;) |
good advice
Thanks for the advice. It may take a while the engine is in Hollywood and I'm in San Diego. My Mother In-law may not up to the task of taking the pics. I can ask and see if she can do it. I know it's a 1964 crate engine. I will have to find out just where he got it from. There are stories but I will have to verify.
I know it's all original with iron heads, block and dual 4 brl intake. The only thing that he ever had to do was replace the head gasket. Thanks |
Just get her one of these!;)

I have to go look at the block. I know it's 1964 (could be 1963) so I don't think it's a side oiler because they didn't do that until 1965. I know it's was a crate engine from ford and not from a car. Any one know any more details from codes would be helpful. Thanks |

The intake C3AE-K indicates a '63 aluminum dual-plane 8V Good luck!:) |
I found the numbers on the Cobra site. I don't have the numbers off the block yet but this is the same heads that came on the 1965 Cobras. They are low rise heads and in some 1966. They went to a mid rise in late 1966.
