Oil Slinger - Do I need one?

I'm working with a Robert Pond aluminum 427 side-oiler engine. I'm doing some engine work to reseal the engine. When I removed the front cover, I discovered the engine went it's first 4000 miles without a front crank oil slinger. I've read some forums that suggest you don't need this and some say you can't use an oil slinger with a double roller steel gear. I don't believe there was an issue leaking oil from the front crank seal, not sure due to other leaks. Should I buy one and install, or go without, or won't work with current engine setup. Feedback appreciated.

I put in a double roller and left the slinger out. Going on third season, no issues. Many other have done the same with no issues

I have never used one and I've built a poop load of FEs....

So...is the purpose of the oil slinger to spin oil up on the cam gear, or to keep oil from reaching the front timing cover oil seal?
