Engine coolant capacity of the 427 FE Ford engine
 
Hello Folks:
I am changing the surge tank for a stainless steel tank, does anyone know approximately how much coolant do I need to refill?

If I am not mistaken, pretty much only what fits in the surge tank.
Or are you draining the radiator too to avoid a mess? Total, including motor, is about 4-5 gallons.

Tks for the input, at this point I was thinking about draining the radiator to avoid the mess and at the same time flush out the old coolant and replace it with new one. I will get the 4-5 gal of 50 % coolant.
Keep you posted of the actual amount used.

Here is a tip: "glue" the thermostat in with a bit of grease or vaseline to avoid it from falling down. Here in South Africa I had to cut the gasket which made it extra painful to fit...

Hello guys,
Not to try to hijack this thread but if someone would please tell me how much coolant should be in the puke tank? I have a BDR with a 427 ci.

Couple of notes
 
BAsque1 Lou No mproblem with changing fluid. Couple of notes
Make sure the frontend is lifted. Leave car overnight after the changing of the fluid this helps to get air pockets out of the motor. Don't recommend running motor with front end up. The best way would be to take the car to a garage which has a exchange machine. This installs new fluid and removes the old at the same time. This also stops and air pockets in the cooling system. As far as thermostat, if you replace it, make sure you add a 1/8" hole through the flat surface and mount this on the top when you reinstall it. This helps get the air out of the system also. 50/50 mix and a bottle of water wetter. If you do the coolant exchange yourself, short road tests of couple miles and check coolant system AFTER motor has cooled off. Top off as needed. IF you have a over fill bottle, fill half way and mark level in it. This way you can see if the radiator cap is working. I fill the surge tank about 1/2 way. This burping of th system may take 3-4 trips before all the air is out. Keep eye on coolant gauge. You know where it normally runs at. Little high or low is OK, key work little. Good luck. Rick L.
