What oil do you put in your 427 side oiler?

Hi all,
It can only have been discussed already however I couldn't find appropriate topics: what oil do you put in the side oiler?

Thanks
Luke

Since I button my Cobra up for the winter, and mainly use it in the summer months I use 20 w 50 Valvoline, Penzoil or Castrol. Big blocks tend to run hot especially in traffic and when you put your foot into it, hence the heavier viscosity.

Mobil 1 15w/50...

Brad Penn 20w-50 goes in my small block.
Be very cautious using Mobil-1 in old school motors with flat tappet cams.

Wow! This has been hashed over a lot here if you do a search. I will abbreviate what most repies have been from my memory:

Joe Gibbs Racing Oil (mine)
Brad Penn
Mobile 1
Rotella

Look for the ZDDP (zinc) content and decide accordingly...;)

DanEC 02-04-2016 03:02 PM

Depending on if you run a flat tappet cam or a roller cam you need to be concerned about ZDDP. I'm currently running Joe Gibbs in my 3 cars with flat tappet cams but when my current supply runs out I'm going back to Rotella 15W-40 diesel oil as it meets all the necessary criteria. I don't see any need to run synthetic in these cars that get limited mileage.

My opinion on oil weight - I like to have at least 20 lbs pressure at hot idle in the summer. The lightest weight oil that will still achieve that works for me. That opinion is worth not more than 2 cents.

There is a product out there called "Cam Shield" which is full of ZDDP. But if your are already broken in and running fine, then the above should apply.
After putting my credit card down for a couple of cases of Gibbs, I may look at something else too.

And we're off and running.

If this were the P-car, the OP would get the perfunctory "use the search function."

Valvoline VR-1 10-30. You can get it on Amazon at a good price, or they can get it at AutoZone or O'Reilly's in a day. I've also used Penn and Gibbs. All three are high zinc.

I'd swear I used these exact keywords FE Engine Oil and didn't hit the post. Might have been too late at night!

Thanks for the info.
Maybe a moderator can close this topic and link to http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/fe-t...ngine-oil.html ?

Side oil, duh!:)

desgros@vtlink. 02-05-2016 07:33 AM

Valvoline racing oil - 10-30 because it has zinc for my flat tappet motor.
