Lykins Motorsports 427FE Build, acventura
Since we're on 427's, I'll post this one too. It will be a 427, but we'll be going at it a different direction than the 427 in Alan Carter's build.
Mr. acventura (CC member) contacted me to build him an all-aluminum 427, based on a Pond aluminum block, some Survival Motorsports cylinder heads, and a custom Scat steel crankshaft in a 3.780" stroke. It will be an interesting comparison between two 427 FE's: good ole-fashioned cast iron power vs new-fangled-high-tech power. Unfortunately, Pond is out of blocks and he's currently between foundries. His current estimate on block availability is the end of June. The crankshaft has been ordered, the Scat 6.800" BBC rods are here, custom Racetec forged pistons have been ordered, Mahle rings are here, the custom Comp Cams hydraulic roller camshaft is here (227/233 @ .050"), custom Quick Fuel carburetor is here, and the cylinder heads with valves are on their way from Barry R. I also have the valve springs, retainers, spring seats, etc. here as well. Will post pics and info as I get it.... |
Hi Brent,
Thanks for posting this. I enjoy every one of your builds. Will. |
How does Barry's head compare to the bbm head. Barry said the bbm head looks like his in many ways. Do you prefer one over the other.

From memory, and there are better people to advise, but Barry's heads will also fit a 390 FE, not sure the valve spacing on the BBM will. In summary they are both good examples, if I was planing a build, I'd consider either equally good. The flow numbers and commentary surrounding them "suggested" that Barry's heads would make for the better street head, and were a little more versatile. The bbm would make a good all out race head (not suggesting it would perform badly on the street), but then if you were that way inclined you'd look at the BT also. Either way, I don't think you can go far wrong with either. Also fwiw, I don't have a dog in this fight. I have a set of Robert Pond heads. Ps. Thanks for sharing Brent! |
