Air Cleaners
1 Attachment(s)
I have these air cleaners on my 427 FE and others have commented that I have an air starved engine. I am curious as to what others are running with the dual quad setup and whether larger cleaners will make a difference. I have lots of room to go with taller ones so that is a non issue.

If you really have more room (height), K&E makes several different height filters to replace the standard S&H filter. Might help a little if you want to stay with that appearance, but no way around the S&H units are very small units and can't flow much air. The part numbers are in this thread.

Don't know that I would go so far to agree with ugly %/ - but they do sort of look like a Kodak slide projector tray. :)

Air filter calculator
I am sure you have seen this but in case you have not?
Second Strike Air Cleaner Calculator
By this calculator you are OK with two paper filters. It is interesting to swap in the oiled felt filter and see the difference.
I have this setup at present, when I first saw photos of it I did not like the look of it.
It grew on me over time. I am a bit of a function over form type guy.

I did the calculations in the past and the top does add quite a bit of surface area.
Good luck!

Surprisingly when I plug in my two S/H filters (8.5 inch x 2 inch x 2each), my engine size (459), peak power (480) and rpm (5400) I get 1% pressure loss and 4.8 HP loss at 5400 rpm. That's better than I expected. Makes me think the calculator may be a bit optimistic.

Two filters is not exactly small. If you stacked them on top of each other it would look like a lot.
It is what it is. I tend to agree. It would be interesting to do dyno runs with and without filters.

I run the K&N E-2570 filter, which is a little taller than the stock foam filter, but still allows you to fit the Stellings screen around it so it looks stock.

I think that's the same one I used also. In checking the specs, it's a bit smaller than I remembered and plugged into the calculator.

air filter
I have the Shelby aluminum 427 with a single Holly and have plenty of air with the K&N filter & K&N top filter. If I change it to the stock style Stellings the engine is severly air starved. I think it is the top K&N filter that makes the most difference. They are expensive but what do you want, performance or looks? When the hood is down you can not see either. Change them back when you take it to a show.

I have a vintage 427 SO setup with a 1x4 Holley (3255-1) too. I've been thinking of doing the same and seeing what add'l HP it brings. You are talking about the K&N extreme air filter, right? I'd have to use a drop base adaptor to get it to clear.

Brings back BAD memories. It was my Dad's version of no more wire hangers.
