427 Side oiler strange hole in deck

I just pulled the motor from my Kirkham 427 due to a significant oil leak. It was coming from the head gasket area at the rear passenger side corner. Block code is C5AE-H.
When I pulled the heads, this is what I found. The mystery holes had been filled with some kind of sealant by the engine builder.
What are these holes?

Looks like oil drain holes for a 427 SOHC.

Well, I certainly wouldn't sell it.
In times past, I have dealt with this in a couple of ways....
1. Find a cup plug (like a freeze plug) that fits the hole, put a little silicone around it and drive it in.
2. Tap the hole for a pipe plug (requires engine to be torn down to bare block).
In either case, whatever plug you make needs to be under the deck surface of the block when installed.

You win!
Those holes are drainbacks for a 427 SOHC cylinder head. For your purposes you can tap in a small freeze plug with some silicone and it'll be fine. But that block might be worth a bunch on money to somebody building an original Cammer!

Agreed. I'd be inclined to sell the block to someone building a cammer and replace it with a BBM (or other) block. Genuine SOHC blocks are scarce / rare, and would be highly prized by someone looking to build a cammer. |
I would concur with Brian and Barry, explore what that block might sell for and if there is interest in it and then compare what a new block might cost. It might put some money back in your pocket.

Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful replies. I'm sure i can find a way to reliably plug the hole but I would feel better if it went to someone who valued it and wanted to build a cammer engine. I'm not ambitious enough to taken on a cammer in Kirkham project and it does not feel right to hide it in a regular FE engine.

I may be interested in your block, What is the condition of your block? What kind of history as far as use and prior machining do you have available?
