Kirkham Billet CNC FE Block

There has been a fair amount of talk on aluminum FE block quality lately. Brent has quit building them because of all the quality issues. It takes a lot more skill and a much better shop to cast aluminum than iron. It is my understanding that humidity is one of the big issues with porosity. I know one fellow only cast aluminum in the winter time, when humidity was low. I wouldn't doubt they are trying to cast aluminum in a rain forest where labor is cheap.

I happened to run into this youtube video of Kirkham machining a solid billet of aluminum. At least in theory, this should eliminate all these issues.

I remember Dave had a thread going on this, but he left the company. So what ever happened to this project?

I was wondering the same thing myself ! Dave Cindrich ("Sandwich") had the car with the prototype eng in it for road testing, and then all went dark ! They seem to be doing a bunch of special cars and other projects, but no mention of the engine. They must have hit a brick wall !
David: if you read this, please post your status on the billet 427, good or bad.
Inquiring minds need to know !!!

I was queuing up for one but chose an alternate direction as I couldn't wait any longer. But My understanding is the block works and works well, but can't be sold due to patents. Something to do about darton sleeves.

Others on the inside would know more.

Don't tell me David is gone, too?!?!?

Maybe I got Tom and David switched in my memory. It happens way too much.

Do not read anything into that.

Now that you say that, I do remember something about the sleeves.

You would think something reasonable could be worked out, but if not patents only last so long.

David CINDRICH left. Not David K. David C was working on the development of the fully machined FE block...

I did see the video last nigh, very interesting. As I am into the build it doesn't help me, but if they can bring it to market, there will be some happy folks for sure

Hey everybody,

Dave "Sandwich" Cindrich is still here with us at Kirkhams. It was my Uncle Thomas that has left. Sandwich is constantly at work making new parts and learning our two newest machines. And he is certainly one of the best teachers I've ever had.

As for the billet aluminum block, yes, the project has slowed to a crawl. We made two billet blocks. One of them now sits inside Sandwiches car and the other sits inside his brother Chris's car. We've simply just got many projects on our hands at the moment, and many cars we are working on getting out the door. Hopefully soon we will get the billet block project up and running again. :) And we have several ideas in store that will surprise you guys in the years to come. ;)

Hope everyone has enjoyed this warm weather we've had! We certainly did here.
