Roller lifter help with installation

Are there any tricks for installing new lifters in a new block? Morel hyd rollers with a new roller cam. Does it matter which side the cross bar sits? Soak in oil overnight? I found no instructions with the kit. Is there anything I should know?

Thanks,
John

John
Good question, look seriously into this with someone more experienced with FE engines.
On pulling down my 385 series 429/460 I observed that the pushrods had been contacting the button head cap screws that attach the link bar lock,
It contacted at full lift and tries to unseat the pushrod,
So my linkbars now face the center of the engine and not the outside .

Hope this helps

Answered this for you on the FE forum.

Link bars ALWAYS face towards each other, due to oiling hole location and link bar to block clearance.

It is not necessary (and actually I would advise against it) to soak hydraulic lifters.

Couple of things

MaSnaka John, here my list, Weather the lifters are Morel or Johnson or Crane, If they are anti pumpup, DON'T soak in oil to fill them.Install some assembly lube where the push rod sits. I hope you have the correct lenght of pushrods. You want the roller or tip of the rocker to stay centered on the valve top. Setting up the valve lash with hydro lifters. Some people do 1/2 turn to full turn on adjuster. These lifters will pumpup at about 5,600 rpms on the motor. IF you want to not have a large fall off of power at this rpm, set the the adjuster to no play and then an extra .015" of compression of the plunger in the lifter. This will stop the large loss of power at this range. A 6,000 rpm limiter to 6,200 is about max or 500 rpm pass max hp rate. Any thing more is just wasting motor. If you have a problem with the rockers down the road, these lifteres will not bleed down and you can't just reinstall the rocker shafts the lifters will hold open the valves. All the revving and idling will not get the correct adjustment back. 1 trick I did is open up a spot on each side between the manifold and head if possible. This will save you from having to pull the intake and side the lifters out through the hole. You will remove the clip and disassemble the lifter to remove the oil. Reassembly it and reinstall. If you didn't move the adjuster on the rockers the setup should back on the money, or you can go through the adjustment again for valve lash. Tools to get lifters out are magnet, needle nose pliers, and coathanger with short u shape to pull out lifters through pushrod hole in intake manifold. Check pushrod holes to clear rods at seat and full open after you install. Any cam with over .600" lift, may sure the valves have room to not hit MR. piston. I like .100" clearance, some guys get away with .060", too tight for me. If you have a bore scope you can check this going through the spark plug hole. Good luck Rick L. anything else, call you have the #

interesting Rick. Lots of info. Thanks for sharing. I will be sure to check my valve to piston clearance.
