Top rad hose?? # handy?
Hi I have the 428 with a stock FE expansion tank exiting in the stock fashion to the passenger side. It is 1 3/4" at that end . I have to do an immediate 90 off this stub forward towards the rad and it would help if another 90 or 45 was in this same plane to get me dropped about 3-4 " to meet up with the rad opening which is 1 1/2" Also on the same side is the rad opening on the passenger side at 1 1/2 " The rad leans back in to the car at the top.
The run to the rad from the expansion tank is a foot at most. Its fairly short and I was wondering what you guys have used for a rad hose part number that fits my layout...IE all openings on the passenger side and two sizes as well... Tim |
Rad Hose
Go pick up a Gates hose #21143. You will only want to use the part of the middle that has all the turns you need. This was a problem for me as well.
I still don't like my lower radiator hose the way it is fitting. Everything was fine until I chose to use the Edelbrock water pump which has a 2 1/4" hose connection. If anyone has a part number on their lower radiator hose I would sure appreciate the number. Clois |

I will look into that number very soon....I too have the edelbrock pump and yeah its a big bugger......Looks like we may have to make it in sections of piping and hose used for connectivity. Keep me informed and I will do the same Tim |
Whaler...... I also have a 428 with passenger outlet. I had a muffler shop bend stainless pipe top and bottom. To meet the Edelbrock pump I used 2 1/4 stainless and welded 2" into it at the rad end. Works great and polishes to a mirror finish. Total cost with silicone hose ends was around $75. Canadian....Good Luck..........Ron

got my hands on some different lengths of SS the other day.... did you enjoy the snow on the weekend?? Crossed the gates number clois gave me to a dayco unit for the bottom hose at lordco..seemed to small as it was less than 2 in at the fat end.. What did you use for the rubber ends "silicone" Tim |
Tim......... Gregg Distrubutors in Nanaimo have a great selection of hoses. They will cut shorts for you. Braided Stainless, Cloth Woven etc. For the hose ends I used blue silicone........... Another 8" of snow last night.... It's no wonder we have winter projects............ Ron

Do you guys know if there is pipe in size of 1 1/2 and 1 3/4. Would a muffler shop have this?
I will likely need that as the insert between each run. At the top hose I bought a hose and cut out the bends I need for either end..now I need a short piece of tube in 1 1/2 For the great long length at the bottom it looks like a chunk of 1 3/4 about 8-10 inches long... Going from 2 1/4 down to 1 3/4..again rubber at either end.. Big decision trying to go above the frame rail or below it on this lower hose. Tim |
To answer my own question yes they have both sizes 1 1/2 being the smallest
I have already got these pieces today and have completed the top hose..the bottom is going to be interesting Tim |
Just a quick note. I replaced my lower hoses last week. I don't have the Gates #s handy (picked 'em up at ERA) but the 2" lower hose did fit over the 2 1/4" Edelbrock snout after a good dose of silicone lubricant had been applied to both hose & pump.
This might help you guys trying to find the proper reducer combinations. |
Thanks Jimbo. I have bought 2 different hoses and am proceeding to chop off what I need at each end of both.
The 2 1/4 end of the edelbrock almost seems sloppy with my 2 1/4 to 2 in reducing rubber end after you are over that initial lip. I plan on a fairly long 90 degree ell shaped pipe made of 2 inch exhaust pipe. Measures about 7" by 10"..Then to complete, a short metal stub of 1 3/4 expanded a hair and welded into the 2 inch to allow me to connect with a 1 3/4 piece of rubber that has a slight 45 upwards to the 1 3/4"rad nipple...what a pain in the a$$. Also have a support tab welded to this pipe to bolt to the rad crossmember which I run underneath of... I heard WD40 makes a nice slip fit as well and beats using gob/spit.
