E3 Spark plugs
Hi everyone, please help settle an argument on my 427 side oiler. I have a 1965 427 side oiler w/428 crank (stroker). Stock cast iron heads w/10-1 comp ratio, ss valves, MSD ignition, crowler cam (16331) 551/565 lift, 2 600 cfm Holley carbs. all set with 24 BTDC timing. Currently I'm running Autolight AP-45 plugs w/.045 gap. I want to try putting E3 spark plugs on to see if there is any noticeable difference. Is there any recommendations from anyone? Also any noticeable difference in your engine performance?

The Autolite AP45 (single platinum) are good plugs. The APP45 (double platinum backstrap and electrode tip) wear a bit better. The E3.72 would be your replacement.

But if the Spark Plug indexing school of thought is valid, the E3 plugs with 3 ground straps have 66% more spark kernel shielding than a standard plug. Which is not a good thing. I'm thinking an open spark kernel must be a good thing or else Autolite would not modify the AR (Racing) series of plugs with cut-back (exposes the electrode) ground straps. actually the 45 is not the right plug anyway, it is whats available closest to the right plug. its a step hotter than the preferred plug. cross the BF 32 which is the right plug, to what your thinking of using, don't use the 45 as your baseline

The Motorcraft BF32 and Autolite 45 or (AP45) are the same per the Autolite site.

Hi Glass, I haven't felt the need to squeeze every last bit of power out of an engine since I quit racing, decades ago. I did the indexing thing and cutting the ground strap back hoping for that last ounce. Even went on a diet before the season started.
If the ultimate is what you're after, drop the bucks and give the E3s a shot. Otherwise, just stay with the Autolites. They will plug the hole and make the spark, just fine. |
