I'm building an all aluminum 482 Tunnelport engine for a new kit I'm building.
My question is should I paint the engine black like an original or leave it natural? I am just looking for general consensus and possible practicality.

If you are going for the OEM look I would paint it.

If the rest of the car is modern or hot rod looking leave it natural.

If I were to leave it natural is there any type of prep to do to the metal to keep it looking good.

Powder coat? Not something you can do at home though, but not expensive and very durable.

Self-Etching! You will also want the paint to be high temp. I don't know if the modern paint still uses Zink Chromate? That's what we used on the WWII aircraft, very caustic, wear an approved face mask! Cheers, Dennis

Engine enamel for aluminum and cast iron is the same.

Yes, self etching primer is a priority for painting aluminum. But I think I would lean towards leaving it bare aluminum. It will weather some with time but still be impressive as hell. Vapor honing is now the hot thing for restoring weathered aluminum parts - so whoever rebuilds it down the road in the future always has that option for restoring its fresh appearance.

Hi I saw a 32 highboy at the grand national roadster show many years ago. It had an aluminum v8 that was polished to a mirror finish, best motor I have ever seen.

Polished would be to hard to maintain
