428 cobra jet help
This may be a dumb question but Im new and trying to do some research befor I spend a lot of money. My question is, is it common to put a 428 cobra jet in a shelby cobra. I know a guy that has one he will sell me but I wanted to see what anybody thought about the idea. Would it be better to find a 427 and use that instead. Any help would be great. Thanks all

There is no reason at all not to use the 428. It looks the same and everthing. The only reason not to is if you want to remake a original. Use the 428 my advice. Besides, I know the original uses something a lot smaller in size.

The 428 was standard equipment on Cobras. The first few hundred were 427s, but a large number of 428s were produced as they were inexpensive to buy from the factory. So, a 428 can be considered "correct". The 428 is a hydraulic-lifter motor with a greater emphasis on torque. The 427 is a solid-lifter, more race oriented motor. That said, check with your engine builder (e.g. Southern Automotive). There are some very nicely assembled 428 engine packages out there. Bill |
I got one and love it.. loads of power, easy to maintain, oh yea.. that nifty 427 aluminum manifold looks really cool too.. (see my photo gallery)

I have to agree with the top posts. I think most would love a 427 but lets face it they are very expensive and hard to find parts for. I think you could build 2 428's for the cost of 1 427 (or close). As a side note Ive seen a real trend of people going to the 460 motors because the parts are available from Ford and a complete brand new high output motor from ford could be gotten for less than 7K. My 514 Ford 600 horse was about $7200.00
But the 535 horse version is quite a bit less. Available at Ford dealers too, all of the Ford SVO motors.
I figure if it ever dies, I will already have a custom big block maybe with a supercharger, waiting in my garage. The less expensive turn key motor simplifies my turnkey build up :p :3DSMILE: |
Oh by the way. I talked to a guy today that just built a very respectable 427 SO.. He told me what it cost to build. Do yourself a favor.. Buy the 428 and spend the left over 15 grand on a something useful...

Your buddy got hosed. Lets say you can buy a 428 for $8,000. That means friend payed $23,000 for a 427? Southeern automotive sell complete 427 SO for $11,900. I had one built last year (not from Southern) for around $12,500 from pan to carb. assembled and dyno tested. |
Well, hosed is subjective. The very best sometimes costs the very most. I think it was alot of money, but next to his 50,000 dollar Harley it seems like a bargain.. Yes the number was 21.5 but of course that included shipping..
