remote oil filter adapter
Can anyone tell me a sure fire way to tell the direction of oil flow on an oil filter adapter on a FE?
I am using an adapter made by TD Performance (P/N TD-1015) and it seems to me that the oil discharge and the oil pressure fitting port should be common. This is the adapter that bolts to the block in the place of the stock filter and has 2 large holes for the filter lines and a small hole for the pressure sender. I think that it bolts up with the small hole forward but I am not sure about the oil discharge and intake lines. I am installing a remote oil filter. There are no arrows that show flow direction. I tried a search but came up with nada. Thanks in advance for any help. |
The oil flows from the outside of the filter to the center. Follow the hole paths in the adapter.

Yeah, I've got the bracket that holds the oil filters sorted out but its is the one that bolts up to the engine(blue in color in your diagram) that I'm not to sure about. I don't want to take a chance on hooking up without being sure. I've heard about oil starvation by having hoses reversed. Thanks |

It seems odd that the oil pressure sender would be on the oil line returning to the engine but I guess that is the design. I went to a local car show on Sunday and checked some FE's that used the same adapter and they were indeed plumbed that way. So that is what I did as well. Better safe than sorry, right? Sorry about the double work. |
I would want to know the pressure available to the engine (coming in) more than the pressure out. Just one way to look at things. The pressure out may flutuate more also, due to irregularities in flow-through the filter.

I have the same adaptor as you and I too was very careful but I would strongly recommend placing some kind of indicator on each fitting going into your adaptor. Maybe something as simple as using colored electrical tape on your outlets. Consequences of a mistake are very expensive.
I am changing my connectors on my outlet to Aeroquip stainless and leaving my inlets as red aluminium. Not saying this is a cureall but I can't afford to make this mistake twice. Good luck. Clois Harlan |
I just read this thread and I am not sure I understand. On a stock engine, does the oil pumped out of the block go thru the center of the filter first then return thru the side or into the side of the filter first?:confused:

As far as I know, all oil filters use the same flow pattern - from the outside in.

An easy way to remember the connections is that the one closest to the pan is coming from the pan (through the pump). The one closest to the top (engine) is going into the engine.

So, oil comes into the filter through the paremeter holes and exits the filter through the large center hole back to the engine.

I know that I am denser than most, so please bear with me. I have the same TD Performance 1015 Oil Filter Bypass. I can't tell from Bob's diagram which way it mounts to the block. Does the connection for the oil pressure gauge point towards the front or the rear of the engine? From Bob's diagram it appears to mount towards the front of the engine. Thanks for your help! I just don't want to sacrifice an engine.

The pressure port should mount to the front of the engine, BUT look at my gallery. All of the photos are oriented with the front of the engine to the left and the top of the engine toward the top of the photo. The back side photos of the two adapters have been reversed so that they could overlay the other photos to show you what is going on behind the scenes.

More Info Than You Wanted
The adapter mounts with the oil pressure port towards the front of the block.
What is equally important, is the fact that the adapter must be modified to enlarge the size of the oil pump out port interface. When you buy a stock Ford oil filter housing gasket and place it on the adapter, you'll see what I mean. Zderf is right---
the adapter goes on the block with the oil pressure sender fitting towards the front of the block. The bottom hole is the output to the filter. The top hole is the return back into the engine from the filter. Also, I too noticed that the adapter did not match the gasket.....about 5 minutes work with a Dremel tool took care of that. Reinstalled and started the engine and had 70 lbs of oil pressure. whoopee! Thanks to all that responded to this post.....this place is the best. |
Thanks for the info. I guess I'm off to the Ford dealer for a gasket and then out to the shop for the trusty Dremel!
