428 Won't stop leaking Oil.....
I'm venting ............ I replaced every friggen gasket on this engine.. And I'm still leaking oil like a crop duster. I can't for the life of me figure out where i'ts coming from. Checked clutch fluid,Full, Checked Tranny ,Full, Whats the secret to these engines? I've got $700 in gaskets and shop time to fix oil leaks and obviously it's not fixed. It's not valve covers, It's not the intake, We put a new rear main and pan gasket on it. THe Oil galley plugs were checked... Do these Fe's have a secret little oil leaker hole somewhere ? THe car is running wonderfully quick and smooth it just won't stop leaking ....

Have you tried putting a dye in the oil and then trace the leak with a black light?

Maybe it's not a leak in a traditional sense. Maybe you are blowing oil ot of your dipstick tube. It ends up all over the bottom of the engine. Check for adequet venting in your valve covers.

I once had a SO 427 that would not stop leaking oil, finally got under the car with the engine running at a good rpm and then discovered oil leaking right thru the side of the porous block. Drilled a hole thru and tapped for a 1/8 pipe plug. No more leaks. McX |
Are you running a closed PCV system or open vent system?
Them engines are sensitive to venting. Unclear if you have cleaned entire engine and let it run on cardboard or clean area to get an idea where it leaks. Are we talking quart/100 miles or quart/1000 miles? |
WE are talking a quart in probably 200 miles. I did talk to my engine builder guy and he reminded me to check the fuel pump .. I did and found a bolt loose there. And 4or 5 loose on the pan which was just replaced about 200 miles ago. And another small leak at the remote oil filter again. So I may be widdling
them down. I guess I'm forced to take a cruise this evening 75 And warm here today. Let's see maybe I'll take a drive up to Penn State and check out the scenery in Happy Valley. Now that sounds like a drive with a mission along with fringe benefits... |
Oh and two out of the covers. One to the intake and another from the air cleaner to the other cover.. And I did do some mods to the Dip it was blowing out about 3 inches.. Not anymore :) I guess it may somewhat be caused by my inability to stay away from inviting people out to play on the Beltway here.

I just found a leak the former owner paid a guy 300 dollars to "fix". The dipstick tube was a sloppy fit.. It was diagnosed as the oil filter bypass.. I put in a new Lokar dip stick and the problem is solved.. Careful though, the Lokar is constructed in such a way that the bottom assembly nuts also hit the oil filter bypass housing (at least on mine) and wouldn't fully seat on its O ring. A bit of RTV and it seems fine.

want to find an oil leak FAST.. Try using Mobile 1.. works great but I am finding leaks in places I didn't know existed.. Anyone want practice changing the front seal on an FE intake??? Nothing about 5 hours in the garage wont cure...

Mobil 1 is whats in mine now but, not for long ..I'm going back to tried and true Valvoline 20-50...

FE's can and do leak from everywhere. You will need to get the fluorescent dye and black light if you really want to get it sealed.

Found the leak....
Top Oil galley plug... And we did use the dye, but this one was leaking badly enough to find without it... Am replacing clutch,pressure plate and flywheel all damaged by heat from slippage due to oil...

IN ALL OF MY YEARS BUILDING F.E.'S I HAVE SEEN SO MANY PEOPLE PUT THE CAM PLUG IN BACKWARDS. THATS WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE. I HAVE ALSO SEEN THE BLOCKS CRACK FROM THE CENTER OIL PLUG TO THE CAM BORE.

And boat cranks that pump it right out the back seal but that's an obvious one!

Don't forget a bellhousing that needs offset dowel pins. If you didn't check the centerline of the bellhousing opening relative to the crankshaft (most people don't) the tranny's input shaft can put a preload on the rear main seal causing it to collapse a little on one side and relax on the other side(where oil will come out) Sounds unlikely but I have fixed rear main seal leaks (that were not fixed by merely replacing the seal) by correcting the bellhousing offset. But check the galley and cam plugs on the back of the motor.
