Timming for a 427???
Ok here is the deal I have a 427 S/O in my ERA that I bought that I am trying to set the timming on. Here is the issue...I have no idea what king of cam is in the car. I do know that the engine was bored .20 over, has a tunnel port dual carb intake, has a MSD 6AL ignition, and the damn thing has something like 11:1 compression. I run 110 octane in it.
I took a guess and set the initial timming 36 advanced and it seems to run good(it shuts off and starts right up with no problems) What do you think??? Thanks in advance, Al |
Are you talking total advance or initial (set at idle)?
If it's initial, 36 sounds like way too much to me. I would think you would want to be @ 10-16, with 32-36 total at 3,000 rpm. I would also suggest doing a search on this site; this was discussed a few months ago. Lots of opinions and suggestions there :D |
ditto.. what does the advance curve look like? If it's pinging in any gear at any throttle position you have gone too far.. 10-16 is a good initial but at 11:1 you will need a hill to coast it down ot get it to fire over about 13 initial.. 36 is safe at 2800-3000 but if you can come in quicker and top out at 38 overall you might try it.. Please do not try too much over 38 at 11:1.. You just don't need that much with those slugs..
If you search this forum and find a guy that claims to run 45-55 don't buy it.. |
