high volume oil pumps
Thirty two years ago my route was to take a new cast iron oil pump and load a taller set of gears and a special cover. As I remember it was Milodon. drill out the block and filter hanger to what ever diameter the gasket is. Who and what is the recamended way to go now? How about the drive shaft?

Michael, try GESSFORD.COM. I bought my SO cam bearings from them, they seem to have most anything you would need for a 427, stay as far away as you can from FPP. Those 'customer no service', 'california limp wrist', told me there was nothing they could do for me when, I installed their RR and one of the adjusting screws broke in the middle??,
their best reply....we can send you a few used ones...yeah right. |

What kind of rocker was it? Pat |
ford power parts (FPP). Actually I'm lucky, I was installing them for the first time and making the initial adjustment when it broke, I'll probably get Smith Brothers to make a new set of adjusting screws and use them on the other engine.

All the HV pumps are good.. Melling, Sealed Power ect.. #57 HV and you will want to change the pump shaft.

One good source is Precision Oil Pumps in Madera, CA, talk to Doug. Phone (559) 645-1951. Purchased his blueprinted FE Pump and Roller Rockers, Billet Stands, Billet Shafts, and Billet Drive. The engine (427 SO) just got off the test stand, great results, 50 PSI at idle.
I personally would not put a oil pump in a high dollar FE without it being blueprinted and bench tested. I think the 1/4" Drive Pump is around 70.00, the 5/16" Drive Pump is 85.00. Stock Pumps are full of metal particals and need to be disassembled and cleaned before using. Less you pump all that crud in your oil galleries. He has a web site , try WWW.PrecisionOilPumps.com, I think. |
The phone number works but the web address doesn't. I bought the 5/16 pump and drive. It's 5/16 on pump end and 1/4 on disrtibuter. The pump end of my improved drive shaft was trying to round.Looks like the oil filter did its job. I let the engine warm at idle before reving so all oil appeared to be filtered and nothing went over releif. Machinist says a polish is all that needs to be done to crank shaft. boil block, clean, reseal ,new bearings ,So you'll know were my allowance went.

I have never seen filings in a NEW oil pump. If you have the pump was probably a take-off something that failed. Or maybe it came from a mass retailer that repackaged it. You might want to consider looking a new supplier.. I am sure the guys in Madera are great but you might be overthinking the process. Sealed Power and Melling high volume pumps give about 50 psi at idle and 70-80 at 3500 (from my experience)..

Michael,
You will be pleased with the quality of the oil pump from PRECISION. I bought the 5/16" by 1/4" drive pump and the Billet Oil Pump Drive, Moly Coated Parts, ect.. Pump puts out 80 PSI at 3,000 RPM on a hot engine. Nice that all the hardware is safety wired too!! |
The pump, arrived .There was a small bag w/ a spacer and a softplug and a small peice of paper saying that this would raise oil pressure 5-10 lbs.Cant get the pan off without raising engine up. So do I go with the higher pressure now? If it doesn't break or leak ,the engine will stay inplace.

Michael,
I didnt use the enclosed spacer to up the pump PSI. I'am using it as supplied. Works great, I dont think you will need any additional PSI. Rick |
