Need help building 428cj

If you guys could, can you give me the break down on your engines. I'm looking to get about 400-450hp out of my engine and still be able have some semi long life out of it. I'm being told that I should go with all Ford Motorsport parts and I have read that alot off engines are using edelbrock parts. I would like to find a good combination that will be reliable in the long run and have some performance. I have a friend that keeps pushing for me to bore the engine 30 over, I don't know if this would be to much?If anyone can help? I also need to find a good parts supplier in California. thanks craig

If the block doesn't need it, why bore it .30 over from the get go? Use it the way it is, you can always bore it later.
There are other ways of getting HP out of them without boring them to ther skins.
It would also depend on what block you are planning on using.
Give George Anderson of Gessford Machine in Hastings Nebraska a call. Get the straight unbiased scoop and then decide.

Good Luck

If you built your engine to stock specs it would be plenty fast and last for 100,000 miles.

How much money can you spend?

How fast do you want to go?

How do you want it to sound?

Do you/can you adjust valves?

Are you going with a single 4 barrel? Or 2?

Are you going to go on long drives?

4 speed or 5 speed overdrive trans?

Automatic?

Are you going to build it yourself or have an engine builder do it?

What parts do you have already?

Are you going to take it to the drag strip ever?

Do your plans MAYBE include nitrous in the future?

Are you going to autocross it or do track days in it? Maybe?

Craig, you can get exactly what you need after you answer these questions. Be brutally honest with yourself on this - it will pay off in the future!

There is no reason to stay with one company when buying parts for your FE....some places do some things better than others....

I hope this helps. Where in CA are you?

There are no ford motorsports parts available for the 428.. Except the windage tray and the oil pump shaft.

You can have my 428 for $4800 FOB my car (you take it out) another grand if I do it. But if I do it I will likely have stripped off the oil pan, valve covers and intake.. But if I do that you can have it for $3800..

Confusing isn't it.. Not nearly as confusing as it will be when I have you help me push my car to Turks house so he will feel sorry for me and sell me his side oiler spares..

Plan on spending $6-8k for a good 428. Maybe 5K if you do the leg work and manage the process.

Aluminum Heads $1500
CJ Block (bare) 1500-2000
Block with crank, rods 2200+/-
Cam, Solid lifters $350
Cam, Haudralic lifters $300
Engine kit with Bearings, Gaskets $800

Labor including machine work $2500

Those prices do not include a gee whiz dual quad intake, vintage shelby valve covers or a high capacity oil pan.. all of which will set you back another $1500-2000.

Might be buying engine for 2k

I have a friend that is selling me the engine. It runs and has a performance manifold and a crab already attached. I priced out everything I need(about $3,500). So the total should be around $5,500. I still need to get a trans for the car. I wish I would have know about you engine before I told my buddy I would buy his.
Thanks, Craig
I still need to get the car.
