CJ Heads Question

Guys - can you help? Friend of mine is building an FE, he has CJ heads, casting code C8OE 6090N.

Now I am sure that I saw a post somewhere saying that you can grind away the hump in front of the exhaust gas recirc ports in the roof of the exhaust runner for better flow, but I can't find it now, and want to advise him how much he could/should grind away.

He already knows about the oiling mods, but any other tips for a good rebuild?

Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance.

Wilf, in 68 FoMoCo still used the thermactor exhaust system, which means you can grind away the entire hump as long as the head has not been drilled by the factory (a hole at one end for the smog system hook up). Just grind away the hump and blend it into the floor of the port, than match the edges of the port to your gasket and blend it back about a half inch or so---sorry, 6.5 mm! If the head has been drilled, you can still flow the port, and if you hit the thermactor (smog) hole, just fill it with hi-temp motor epoxy and blend into the port. You really dont need to go crazy, just use common sense and make the EXHAUST port nice and smooth, with as little obstruction as possible. Oh, and port match the intake too (match the port to the gasket) ! Hope this helps!

Does your friend have a die grinder, and carbide dies for use on cast iron? These are not hardware store items.

Guys - thanks, and yes Jack21, my friend is amply supplied with tools - he's the guy who built my car!!!
Now he is building (another) one for himself, and using a FE engine for it. Whilst there last weekend I looked at the heads, and idly remarked that I thought I had seen someone talking about CJ heads and removing these humps in the exhaust ports, just couldn't turn it up in a search, since just searching on "CJ" can't be done (must be 3 letters or more long for a search term), and using "heads" as a search term got me drowned in results!
