FE numbers...
I have a line on a 428 with CJ heads and alum manifold. The motor was rebuilt about 3 years ago. The owner was going to do a Cobra. He passed away. His son in law is selling this motor with a rebuilt C6 tranny.
I asked him what year the motor was from but he did not know. What I need is the location of the numbers so he can look for them on the block. Thanks, Mike |

I have a 1969 428 CJ manual and the numbers on mine are on the front right side of the block. The date code is "Cast in raised characters of the iol fileter adapter boss" Date code is YMD type. Y=Calander year, M=Month, D=day of month. Also under the valve covers they should have the same date code stamped in the top of the heads. I have checked mine and they are there. Ignore the 352 on the block as that was a common Ford casting number on every Fe block from the 332 through the 428s. Y= 1969, A= Jan., D= 1 Mine was January 1, 1969. Ron61 Ron Widener |

I have a 1969 Cobra Jet engine reference manual. The head numbers should be cast in raised numbers between the center two spark plugs. According to my manual C8OEN is the number for the regular 428 CJ. Mine is the 428 SCJ and my head #s are different as they are 427 medium riser heads that came on it from the factory. Also under the valve covers you should have the same date code as you found on the block. It is laid out as I showed in an earlier post to this. Ron61 Ron Widener |

Mike, there are a lot of similarity between 390 and 428 part numbers. You already have the date code, so you know it is a '68. Block numbers for a '68 428 can be C8ME. Block numbers for a '68 390 C8AE-x, where x=change code such as A, C, or E.
Heads for the 428 CJ are C8OE-H, or C8OE-N for both CJ and SCJ. Standard 428s can be C8AE-F. But notice that '68 390 heads can have these numbers: C8OE-A, C8OE-B, C8OE-F, or C8AE-A. The change code is really the only difference and sometimes the numbers are hard to read. I think it might also be possible that the 390 and 428 share the C8AZ number with the 428 using later change code numbers. The best way to be sure is measure the bore: 4.13 for the 428 and 4.05 for the 390. |
