What is correct or original ?
 
Hi, Some 427so questons I need some help with:
1.) Are there specific types of bolts that attach the cyl. heads to the intake manifold. For instance, are they slotted ?
2.) Are there any distinguishing characteristics to the valve covers ? what were original ?
3.) are original alternator brackets easy to find ?
4.) Are original aluminum heads easy to find in almost new condition or nos condition, How about used condition with a different size valve ? Are they different value ?

Sorry for all the questions. I am putting the finishing touches on a motor(427 sideoiler)and thought I would check with the experts. I am trying to decide whether to port and polish a set of " in the box"thunderbolt" heads and change to a slightly larger valve. They are aluminum "c5".
Are original dented valve covers better than repro valve covers ?

I believe the original bolts were slotted, but not many would consider that a breach of originality.

Plain chrome valve covers for '65. Look in my gallery. "plain but potent" picture.

Original Ford brackets can still be found in the wrecking yards. To fit a Cobra engine compartment, you need to look for ones that tuck the alternator up close to the head.

You would not want original aluminum heads if you could find them. The science wasn't there yet in 1965. I'll get everybody chipping in with their favorite here, but I'd use Dove aluminum Medium riser heads. I did and had good results. BTW theycome ready for the really big tunnel port valves. Give Dove a call on the cost. Dove has all of the original Ford castings for heads and manifolds. Not cheap but worth the money.

I wouldn't bother using dented original valve covers. The new ones are exact. I had to take mine in to get them polished better and rechromed. Import junk! The steel was fine, just the finish stunk.

The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked......when it should.

Unless you just want to do it for the heck of it, I'd suggest having the heads done by a pro. Those heads as cast will make plenty of HP. About the best thing us amatures can do with heads is a little gasket matching and cleanup if there's any casting flash.

I you want to be really particular about the build, the heads and manifold should be fitted to the block and port matched to eachother. Deck height on the block can make a lot of difference in how they fit and line up. Even the machining on the heads and manifold when new can be suspect. I'd also strongly suggest using studs instead of bolts for aluminum heads.
