Aluminum Cylinder Head Choices For FE ???
Guys, What else is there in Aluminum Heads for a 427SO. I know of the Edelbrock Performer, and the Shelby. Who/What else?, and what do you guys like and why?? At this point I am in search of the S/O block, most likely going 428 crank. Street mostly.

Baxter, your best street selection is still the Edelbrock 76CC heads. They can handle 2.190 Intake x 1.655 or slightly larger exhaust valves and this is much better than the Shelby which offers only 1.750" exhaust valve seats in the head...if your cam is very large you will have exhaust valve to cylinder bore problems using the heads the way they sell them. The exhaust seats will need to be changed for the smaller diameter valves you'll end up using if you know to check for the cyl wall clearance issue....if you don't, then later on you will most likely learn this lesson. Dove also offers heads but these wouln't be your 1st or 2nd choice for a street engine like you're describing..

Thanks George, I feel better now, hearing from an expert like yourself puts my mind at ease about the edelbrock heads. You know how we are always looking for something better, sometimes
we forget about the tried and true. Regards |
FE Heads
Expert?...well maybe lots of experience....at any rate...Shelby heads can be worked to be a great head too...but the Edelbrock geometry is better for what you're doing....not to say they don't also need some TLC to improve them a but too....but much less and they are a safer head to use for most street engines being built by less experienced shops....although I would never use them as they come from Edelbrock assembled....the Valve work and machine practices used by them needs to be improved. Most good shops would prefer to buy bare heads and do the final work themselves...Good luck with your project!
