428 or What???
Came across a 428 with casting #s C6ME they also state the head casting # are C4AE 6090G with 2.09 intake and 1.66 exhaust. The enging has been dynoed and is ready to install. All that I can find on casting # lead to a 390. What can the FE experts tell me about this.
NWCC If this is a truley a 428 I just may have a SB for anyone in the NorthWest that may be interested. The motor may be a small block but I have had a lot of fun with the BB's |
Fred,
My 428 block is a C6ME, with a 390 cast on one end. The 428 has a bore of 4.13". The 390 and 410 have bores of 4.05". All three were cast as C6ME. I believe that they all can be bored .060" over max. So a 390 bore can come close (4.11") to a new 428, but most 428s are at least .030" over by now at 4.16". According to Steve Christ (How to rebuild big-block Ford engines, 1983), your head (6090G) # is correct for a C3AE, late '63 427 low-riser. The 390 crank has a 3.78" stroke. The 410 and 428 use the 428 crank with a 3.98" stroke. I don't think that there is any way to distinguish the blocks externally. However, you may try posting to this link: http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/74182 where the FE heads hang out. Keith |
Fred,
There is another way to identify the 428 block without going inside......knock out the expansion plug behind the motor mount....you'll see "428" Yet another way is to look at the flywheeel or flex plate which will have an external weight out near the ring gear..... JJJ |
