What type of 427 motor is this. Is it a S.O. or a C.O. The guy who is selling says it is a C.O. but in the motor casting sheets I have seen list it as a S.O. Is there something I should look at for final confirmation.
Thanks Allan |
My book shows 1966 and 1966 S.O.
You know Ford! |
According to the casting #'s I have it's a 428.
C6AE-B '66/ 428 c.i.d. Police Interceptor, Solid Lifters You better check further. |
I think the answer is it can be either a 427 or a 428. In addition, for that code you may need the date code to identify whether it is a SO or CO--believe it can be either there too.

whether it's a sideoiler or not can be told simply by looking at the driver's side of the block, lower portion...
center-oiler (from Gessford's site): http://www.gessford.com/images/1-2sleeveblk.gif side-oiler (note the oil gallery running along the side of the block slightly above the crossbolts-from ebay): http://ebay2.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_...295142/i-5.JPG |
Well in my book"Big block Ford engines by Steve Crist" it lists as -65 /66 so.
if you can take a look at the back of the block,if its a side oiler it will have two plugs left and right of the cam, co will be undrilled and just have the raised caststing good luck , Karl |
Yeah I guess its kind of silly to look for a date code if you are right there looking at the engine. :D
Point is, though, it can be either SO or CO or 428. |
I don't want to stick my neck out too far here, but C6 says the year 1966 and I am not aware of any CO blocks being built after 65. The SO came out in 65. I wouldn't argue the 428, because 66 is when it came out.

Hi Al, yes that is right. Supposedly after March 65, all 427s were SO's. But I think what may have happened is that some '65 blocks got this stamp too, and if they were early they may have been CO's. Who knows--a bit confusing at times.

Actually it's
65-66 to 12/9/65 side-oiler and 66 CO |
Al,
There are a copuple of possibilities. One is that the casting numbed is not clear on the 6 and it could be an 8 which would make the block a side oiler with hydraulic lifters. The other possibility is that it is a marine engine, drilled as a center oiler with hydraulic lifters. I have a pair of C5AE-H blocks I removed from a boat. These are side oiler, cross bolt blocks and are drilled as center oilers with hydraulic lifters. Rhino |
