New MSD Ready To Run for FE
Are they shipping yet? Just saw and ad for it in Hot Rod. It would be nice to have a vacume advance I would think. Any comments?
MSD part number is 8595 - summit has them listed as backorderd for $228. Chuck |
Sorry, that was $288.
Carshop, Inc. has it for $334, no indication if it's in stock or not.

Vacuum advance not necessary on a car with the power to weight ratio of a Cobra. Save your money.

Jeff's right, I recurved my Ford duraspark,
which is exactly the same as MSD, pop the caps off and see for yourself. Use the light springs. |
Your duraspark doesn't have vac advance?
I'm confused, sorry for the dumb question. I had looked at a duraspark but what I've seen is it coming with a single and a dual diaphram vacume advance.

The same? No Way!
Sorry Pat but the only thing an OEM Ford distributor and A MSD unit share is the reluctor and basic coil pickup assembly. The MSD distibutors are far better in materials and craftsmanship than the OEM piece. The Billet MSD piece uses a sealed ball bearing in the top area and an oilite bronze bushing in the bottom for better support. The OEM Ford piece hasn't changed in basic construction in over 45 years. The unhardened shaft is supported by a single bushing and can develop quite a bit of "additional clearance" when loaded by a high volume oil pump. Ok for stock application but leaving a lot to be desired in high performance circles.
Just my observation Rick |
