427 factory dual point distributor ??
Does anyone have an EXTRA one that they would like to sell??
I am looking to replace the dual points with a Pertronix II kit. I want the vintage look, plus the vacuum advance on a regular distributor hits the expansion tank. Thanks, Bill Cook :D |
Bill, what's wrong with the one you have? I have asked around about improved performance W/newer ignition parts and nobody has been able to convince me ther is any gain exepting having to gap points. I too like the look of the original eq. i have a magneto dist.just sitting on a shelf , just dont like the look

Kobra Karl , when you hit about 100 the points bounce , hard to go faster .
Bill , The pertronics kit is avaliable thew summit , 70 bucks . Can you remove the vacume part , and use a kit with it ? , be sure to get it curved . |
John ,
Thats about 4700 rpm in my car, i take it to 6500 occasionally w/o any noticeable misfire, isn't that part of the purpose of the dual point ? |
Thanks to Tim-Red ERA
This place is great !!!
This eveneing Tim Red-ERA emailed me that he had an extra dual point sitting on a shelf in his garage. We made a deal, and the check is on the way. Thanks to Tim and everyone on Club Cobra, and especially Brent !!! Cheers, Bill Cook :D |
Bill:
Don't know if you have any experience with Pertonix, but it works great in mine. Very easy to install. I've had my 427 over 6000 rpm without a misfire. Nothing but trouble with the old dual points. The Pertronix has been in about a year and I haven't messed with it once. John |
Actually no, the biggest purpose of a dual point distributor is so the dwell, or the number of degrees the points function is increased..

I had Ford dual point distrib in 68. Points would wear rubbing blocks. They were a pain . Just when you needed to be some where the tach would act up ,car would run great for a breif period then fall on its face.Breakerless is much better.

We ran a dual point in our stock car for years never had a problem. Switched over to single points in same dist with MSD 6T would pull well past 7000. 427 tunnel port 428 crank 200 thousands longer crower rods

Dual points are "interesting", but for most people cause more trouble keeping them setup properly than any benefit they provide.
Increased dwell: the amount of time the coil is "charged up" with low voltage, the more "charge" or "energy" is stored in the coil the better. When the points (electronic trigger or whatever you might have) break the low voltage circuit all that "stored energy" in the coil winding collapses and "induces" a high voltage energy burst into the center solid core of the coil. This high energy boost with a "point type system" and a "decent coil" is around 15 to 20 thousand volts. All that from a 12 volt momentary charge! Electronic ignition is a better "switch" than points could ever hope to be. A "clean" ON-OFF signal. Points tend to "arc" when they open/close, so it's not a clean break/make deal. The "burst" of energy is thus somewhat degraded. In addition, an electronic "switch" can increase the "dwell" much longer than points ever could. Clean break, more dwell, BIGGER bang! Figure 30 to 40 volts AND reliable at high rpm! So what? If the spark plug will "fire" with 10K volts, why do you need 40K volts? You might not! High compression, engine timing, lean fuel air ratios, high rpm are all things that affect the voltage required to "fire" the spark plug. Thats why some motors need it, some don't! Ernie That was fun, you know how it is to find someone that even wants to talk about "points" these days??? |
Thanks Ernie I needed that!
