PHR Engine Masters Contest

http://www.popularhotrodding.com/eng..._Enginemaster/

Anybody else follow that contest? They gave big checks to the guy who made the most power out of a 366 cu. in. engine. Mostly chebbies, a "Cleavor" Ford came in second, a couple more fords and a mopar in the top 12.

Anyway, this years contest will be big blocks with a 470 cu. in. maximum. Wouldn't it be great to see an full house FE in that contest? Surely some of our expert builders can be competitive?

If the winner last year put out around 600HP from 366 cu. in., what would you expect to see out of 470 cu. in. ?

I'm a PHR subscriber and I followed that contest pretty closely. It's a very interesting contest. Man, those guys got a LOT of ponies out of 366 cubes!

The nice part is that the engine isn't ranked on peak power or peak torque. Instead they took numerous data points throughout a given RPM range and averaged the recorded power and torque values from that range. This provided an extremely fair evaluation of the motors because you didn't need the highest peak power to win. If your motor offered tons of low and mid-range power/torque, you could still beat the guy who made more peak power. This placed an emphasis on building a more streetable motor.

Like you, I'm really looking forward to seeing some of this year's entries. One of our resident builders simply must submit an FE (are you listening, Bill?)

Cool article. Big power. But did you see what most of them estimated to build a similar engine? Some of those prices got up to the 427 SO territory... Yeow.
