427 harmonic balancer ??
Iv'e decided to add a set of March pulleys to my engine . It appears that my lower pully is one peice with the balancer and will not allow the new pully to be mounted.
Do i need a different balancer? or is there no way to put a lower pully on a 427? thanks Karl |
You need one of the later style balancers that does not have the pulley cast to the dampener. All 360/390 trucks used this style. I think that you can still get them new...I bought a NOS Ford one from Stevens special engine parts (Fort Worth Texas 817-336-2673) about a year ago for $69.00. It was zero balanced. Give them a call.

I have a couple extra which are OEM without a pullie.. $50 and shipping and it's yours..

Thanks for the offer Micheal, I had given up , the price i was finding was in the hundreds and then when i found out i needed some kind of "special " puller I returned the bottom pully for credit and re painted mine.......... hmmmmm.....course i could go back and get it.....but how to remove ..............

Special? Harmonic balancer pullers are $15 at Kragen Tell you what, if you change your mind I will sell you one of these for $35.. that way you are out the door for $50. The pullers work for steering wheels and tons of other stuff too.

many parts stores rent these things for.. you guessed it.. about $15.. I bet you can find one online for less.. Some better parts houses loan these with proper ID.. Of course they want you to buy something along the way..

While you are in there Karl now would be the time to go to a polished timing cover.. They are really easy to install once you have the harmonic balancer off. just take off the water pump and bingo.. that would give you a reason to go get the loaner from the better parts store.. to get the timing gasket set you will need for the polished timing cover.

But where to find a polished timing cover.. you could get one at Gessford.. They are $250. and up.. Or.. Oh look.. a spare polished timing cover..

This timing cover was in a 427 that broke a cam.. there was a small crack that was professionally repaired at the top of the cover. You can't see it, it has been so well repaired, enless you look from the inside.. A gasket kit Fel pro #2720 is about $35.. That's all you would need to do the job.. I suspect you buy the gasket kit and they will loan you the puller.. includes the water pump. timing cover gasket and seal.. |

No offense.. but when you run side oiler "the comp look" goes without saying.. Hand polished aluminum does nothing to detract from the look.. But then if you aren't willing to go the extra mile who can blame you. It certainly isn't for everyone.

I just finished bolting it all up tonight , and i dont think i'm in the mood to tear the front off of it again. at least not till my new garage is done (maybe six weeks) As for "look " I'm going "sand cast" with "chrome highlights" over old ford blue. my local FE speed shop has a dusty CS timing cover hanging on the wall , i've been temted but i really like the engine blue for contrast. I took a look through your pics.....really like your car color and the Shelby valve covers.......what you need is a stock fuel log.......... how did your wheels come out? Perry, c,mon shiny good.........Karl like shiny..............well not maybe as much as some... is your car a contemporary? some very nice work. |
Polish the intake! no thanks, I didn't really care for the shinny wheels so I sand blasted them. 'carlsfordparts' has (new I guess) aluminum pent roofs
I'm thinking about picking up. Kobra, I regret not purchasing a contemporary, could have saved me much trouble and time. |
