stock 428 with a $ steel crank?

Has any one ever heard of a $ sign steel crank in a 428?? An old freind of mine bought a "67" 428 for a hot rod truck he is building, and he told me the crank has a dollar sign on it.

1. I have never heard of a stock steel 428 crank(means very little)

2.If he had a 427 crank in a 428 wouldnt that be about a 400?

3.does the $ sign always mean steel?

4. He IS a Chevy guy

Don't know about $, (I don't think there is such a thing as a steel 428 crank from the factory), but a 27 crank in a 28 block = 406.

It's real easy to tell if it is really steel and not cast iron.....even still in the block. A cast crank has parting lines on the counterweights and throws. They're fairly thin. A steel crank has been forged, and what would be parting lines is a very wide (1/4-3/8") raised area that will evidence grinding.

Last easy identifier: (out of the block) strike a steel crank with a hammer and it rings like a bell. A cast crank just makes a metallic thunk...no ring. Obviously you don't hit a crank in a vital area. Just tap on a counterweight.

No, other than custom aftermarket, there are no steel 428 cranks.

If it somehow has a factory steel crank and the block is truly a 428 bore, it would be a 406. Not at all impossible, though most 406's (as far as I know) had cast cranks. Could just be a backyard homologation of parts too. Not impossible for it to have had a 361 truck crank (steel) modified for passenger engine use. Using that crank in a 427 makes it about 400 cid. don't know what it would be in a 428 block.

The $ sign is a sure indication that it is a steel crank. The $ sign was a marking so that Ford factory workers could quickly identify the high dollar forged steel crank. Ford management did not want the assembly shop dropping expensive forged cranks into low compression 390's.

There were some Steel 428 cranks made. many people swear they do not exsist. Well they do, not many but they were rough forged and some were finished by engine builder. there was one of these on e-bay a few months back. price was $1500, NOS. I think these were used in the NASCAR cheater engines in the 60's.They have the $ on it. a very rare find if its a true 428 and not a 427 crank.G.

Reviving an ancient thread from the dead...

Buddy of mine is a hardcore Ford guy who has been around a while. He recently picked up some FE bits including an NOS 3.98 stroke crank with the $ sign. He doesn't know if he wants to use this in a max effort build or sell it/trade it for a stroker crank.

Anyone have any updated info? Any guesstimates on value?
