More Info PHR Engine Masters Challenge
The may issue has a little more information on the contest. I told my wife if I win the lottery I'm quiting my job and building a motor for this, she said she'd quit to and help me! Not that I'd have any chance of even placing but it sure would be fun!
Some highlights. 470 cu.in. limit. No race only heads like Dart Big Cheif. No roller cams. No exhaust port plates and things like that. I assume like last year the scoring will be based on average hp and torque over the street driving rpm ranges. Single 4V carburetor and distributor (non programmable) ignition, OE style valvetrain. And of course 92 octane. So what would one build FE for this? I seriously doubt a SOHC would be allowed but I'm sure there will be chrysler hemis. I'm thinking a stroked 427 with tunnel port heads? I'm affraid you are going to need at least 900 peak HP to be in the running. I sincerely hope some of our FE builders will be participating in this, anybody hear any rumors? Chuck |
I read that, too. If memory serves, I think the OHV engines are banned from competing... can't remember. I noticed they forgot to mention anything about the crankshaft. I was surprised at some of the "modifications" that they didn't allow.
I'm also not sure the side-oiler blocks would be allowed to compete. Do they meet the "commercially available" criteria? I mean they're as rare as hen's teeth these days. Like you, I would LOVE to see some of the Cobra engine builders enter this one. Are you listening, Bill? :D Did you notice in the "letters from readers" section that someone mentioned a source for aluminum 460 blocks? I thought that was interesting. Keith :) |
It's going to be a dyno engine only, running in a limited (low) rpm range.
I wouldn't get all exotic. 4.25 bore x 4.125 stroke, loose bearings, sideoiler block not important unless that's the only one to go 4.25 bore. More important would be the intake and head porting. Should promote low-rpm flow and some work as needed on the exhaust port. Proper cam selection, electric water pump. Tunnel ports and SOHC heads work outside the range, except I don't know if maybe they might not be needed given the displacement. |
