Value of this 428 PI?

What do you think the following block is worth?

1968 428PI. It has never been bored but has been honed at the machine shop. The block has been checked out at the machine shop. The crank has been polished 10 under and the rods are original. It has new pistons at the original bore. It has new chain and gears, lifters, oilpump, cam and bearings, freeze plugs, ect. It is ready for assembly.

I don't know the casting number. Any rough estimates on what I should pay for something like this?

KobraKarl 03-24-2003 10:45 PM

Does it have heads?

joea 03-24-2003 11:06 PM

No. It is a short block. I believe it has a cam though

KobraKarl 03-24-2003 11:17 PM

I Would guess...........mmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........$2500+-
At least thats what I would pay,

joea 03-24-2003 11:23 PM

Thanks....I was thinking 3500.....I definitely would have over bid!

KobraKarl 03-24-2003 11:35 PM

joea,

you may be right , I just use 427 #'s as a reference, $6000 will buy a similar427 block , a standard 428 block can be had for $600 to $700 . A PI block is not vastly superior to a standard block, half the money in a pi engine is in the heads.
see if you cant get some more opinions from the boys before you go.

From experience I would strongly recommend that you are buying a real Cobra Jet block and not a truck block. Also, check the serial numbers on the crank and be sure you actually have a 428 crank. If you go to pick it up pull off a main cap and check the crank and bearing, also check a rod bearing. Find out what machine shop did the work. Was it line bored and honed, decked and surfaced, magnafluxed, was new cam bearing installed.

You're spending a lot of money so be sure you know what you are buying. Sorry to be so pesamistic but burn me once......

Good luck.
