Comp Cams 292H?

Is anyone running a Comp Cams 292H in their FE? If so, I'd appreciate your thoughts on streetability, idle quality, power band, etc.
Would you use it again? If not, why, and what would you use instead?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
I ran the 305H in my 390FE. This motor was in my Hi-Tech. The cam had a good curve but it was a little too big. I have used the 292H in many small blocks with great sucess. This cam idles very nasty. It sounds awsome. I give the 292H a thumbs up. I know have a solid cam in my 427FE.

Mike,

I have that cam in my 390. Its matched with Edelbrock alum heads, intake and a 780 cfm Holley. Never on the rollers so I can't give you any numbers.

It idles a bit nervously at about 900-950 rpm and just like Shannon says it sounds great. Comes on like gangbusters at about 2,500 rpm. Streetable - absolutely. I drive my car as much as I can. It handles traffic lights, freeway jaunts, etc. without a problem.

It was in the car when I bought it - I am really not qualified to say if I would use it again. Plenty of folks here with way more FE smarts could help you pick the "right" cam.

Hey Mike,

Hey Mike,

just as a word of caution, if you can find someone within a few hours driving distance that has the 292H or 294S in an FE car, truck, whatever, its worth checking out in person; if possible.

I have a similar ground Crower cam now, and like it. I just downgraded last week... from even a more radical cam - reluctantly. However, one person might think the 294H is great, and the next guy might feel its still a bit much for street driving. Two of my local friends are split. One went with the same, the other stepped down a notch more. Two different guys and ideas, needs.

After just replacing my cam, its a fresh reminder to say its worth taking the time to be sure about what you really expect to get from it. Torque/RPM range - where? Sound, idle, etc... It really is the brain of the motor and worth checking out first hand if you can somehow. See Ya.

Chaplin Hi Mike Hows the car coming??? Did you get my e-mail? Swap meet is next week at E-town. I might go. New job has me working more sats. One thing to remember, bigger is not always better. Ask some of these builders what they are using. I might go up 1 size in cams for my motor. I might go up the end of april on the 26. I have to get my stuff and pay Pete P. Did you go to the FE-Forum on the web? They have some good advice also. Talk to you soon Rick Lake

KobraKarl,
I wish I could tell you but I dont know what cam Southern Automotive used. Bill Parham recommended this specific cam. I am in process of receiving my build sheet. I will let you know when I get it. I can say it is a solid lifter and the lash is set at 26 hot. It has a nasty idle and come on xtremely strong.

Thanks guys for the replies
The reason I asked is because that is the cam that's in my motor. I probably would have chosen one one step smaller, but we'll see. I'll give it a chance and change it in a year if it's too much.

Rick-
I did not get any emails from you, I was having some computer problems for a while too. Car is coming along. Car is currently at the painter and probably will be ready to come home early May. Also, I picked up my motor today- it looks very good. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

I plan on heading to Etown on Sunday- don't think I'll be able to make of Fri. or Sat. Let me know if you go up to ERA, if I can, I'll take the ride with you.

Mike
